Question for Germans re: Baumärkte
« on: September 27, 2011, 09:27:29 AM »
Hi

What builders' makets/hardware stores are good for buying insulation foam (the dense kind, easy to carve, pink, blue, or green)?

There's a Max Bahr in Flensburg - would that be a place to get it?

Suggestions VERY welcome, but preferably places not too far from the Danish border  :)
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Max Bahr used to carry blue foam called MaestroTherm, which I don't like at all. Nowadays I usually use the original Styrodur (green), which can be obtained from the local Hornbach here in Kiel. That might be a bit far, but I could offer to bring a few boards to Horisont, if you can wait this long (and if you're there, obviously).

That's a nice offer, and of course I'll then be there (I was planning to, anyway).   :)

So please, do, if it's not too much trouble. PM me if you want me to send you some money in advance; otherwise I can pay you in DKK in Esbjerg, so you'll have some beer money (I'll have to at least buy you a pint, anyway, but I expect that some of us will lean back in a bar for a beer at least a couple of times during the weekend)  ;)

I think I'll then bring the trailer, next time I go to GLAM - I should be able to get someone to pop into my car friday or Saturday and show me to the store for a quick shopping - I can then take a load home and sell off some at my club or otherwise.. maybe :)

Danish money in Esbjerg will be fine, I guess. How many boards do you have in mind, and which thickness?

What is available? I'll mostly do rocks, cliffs, and large hills with them, I guess, so 'medium' to 'thick' is probably the most useable, but I don't know the exact measurements.

I think a couple of each of the two thickest types would be fine for the time being - I have a BIG zombie project starting as of today, which will probably take up most of my hobby time until after Christmas, so terrain is not going to be much of a concern before then.

But if the stuff is really so nice to work with, I'll certainly be taking some home from GLAM, too  :)

As soon as I have my garage attic floor finished, I'll be starting to set up/build a more or less permanent table with a south-east Asia coastal trading station as a theatre, and turning point, for pulp games (like China Station, seen at Bob Murch's gallery), so I'm probably going to use thinner boards to elevate the dry land from the coast/harbour/river (yes, there will be river pirates!  ;) ), but that is not going to happen before spring, I think.

I discussed the problem with Prof since a month. It seems that Max Bahr after they were sold to Practica didn't sell the blue or pink anymore. tried to get it in Hamburg. Only the green styrodur said one of the working guys in the market. I get mine now from a distributor for roof-supplier

Yes, I just got a reply from them, that they carry the light green Styrodur (I asked there and at Otto Duborg, no luck at OD).

This means I can go to Flensburg for re-stocking when visiting my in-laws - and my kids will love to go to Germany (even if only just crossing the border).

But, Jens, please do take some to Horisont, anyway; I don't know if we'll be visiting Haderslev, soon, as we went there last weekend.
