Any terrain pictures for Afganistan?
« on: 06 October 2011, 04:35:09 PM »
I have google imaged to little avail so would someone be kind enough to direct me to somewhere that has good reference for rural buildings, hill forts and general urban areas in Afganistan/surrounding environs please  :)

This is for NWF etc.

Scenery I'm good for, plenty of those types of image around.

cheers

James

Hi,

Yes I've had that difficulty myself, the kind of thing that you think would be easy to research but isn't. Try this online volume:

Also, if you can find it in a library "Traditional Architecture of Afghanistan" by Hallet & Samizay is a gem.

Thanks for the help chaps  :)

@ Hobbit - That PDF is taking a while to download (I'm on the pad) but from the quick moving thumbnail it looks promising.

@ Hammers - I had a quick shufty through but there's not much there at the mo, but it's got me going on the right track  :) I thought this was paticulary amusing

Basically the idea is to do some mid level skirmishing around the 1840-90ish time period (currently reading the Flashman books again  :D ) and if course the opportunity will arise to make some terrain etc.

For the figures, I'm not going to go 100% accurate but it will be close enough.

cheers

Hi Jim,
I remember a few years ago a Canadian soldier that was over there was discussing the buildings, etc. I know it's not helpful....but I can't remember where I saw that now, but maybe it will jog someone else's memory (?).  I kind of think it was on a blog, but again not sure. I do remember he stated that the buildings are not at all like the typical "middle east" types houses. I'll look back through my files and bookmarks and see what I can come up with.

How about searching for newsreel footage?
Not just the current stuff from Helmand, but the Soviet era news/documentaries, or even 1930s Pathe style.

Hello JB.
It is a bit of a trawl wading through the whole lot but I had some good results Googleing Afghanistan compound,
then tower, fort and house. mostly images from the modern conflict as you know but the traditional build methods seem to endure.

I know the USMC have a reputation for getting by on the smell of an oily rag but it seems their wheeled transport situation is worse than anyone could have imagined.

Thanks Dave, that's just the sort of thing I'm after  :)

Picture number three is probably the most useful but at first glance, the solider in picture number one looks like he's in a wheelchair  lol

The fort in your second post looks to neat, if you know what I mean, but it's certainly worth looking more into.

Thanks for the other suggestions, I think i've got enough to be getting on with for now  :)

cheers

James

Here is a picture of an Afridi tower in the Khyber Pass that I copied off of eBay
