Starting my Pulp Skirmish project

Hey everyone,

Now that I've wrapped up most of the painting I need to do for my 28mm native American skirmish project, it is time to start a new one!  Here are pics of what I've done in the last few weeks.  The setting is going to be 1930s Orient, with rival archeologist, secret martial societies, government interference, avaricious museum owners, and more. 

First up is the secret martial arts society, The Order of the Fire Coral.  These are 25mm MegaMinis figs, which really aren't the greatest in detail.  They were incredibly cheap at the flea market when I picked them up, though!  There is one Ral Partha figure in the first batch...and you can definitely see the difference in sculpting! 

Next post, just to keep the thread more organized, will be my 28mm Old Glory U.S. sailors.  They provide the "muscle" for an American archeologist, from time to time...

Here's the next faction I plan on showing up in my games: Asian (Chinese/Filipino/etc.) bandits!  Figures are 25mm Old Glory...pretty sure they are Moro tribesmen from their Spanish-American War line.

I like how they turned out, but I'm going to have to rethink how I do their eyes.  Way too light colored, IMO.

Not a big fan of those minis, but all in all you're off to a good start!

And here's the latest installment, some German sailors as backup firepower for the Von Jaeger's German archeological team...



Sailors are actually 25mm Old Glory Spanish sailors from their Spanish-American War range. I did a medium gray drybrush on the black uniforms to bring out some highlights.  I chose brownish pants after looking at numerous photos of interwar German sailor uniforms.  Seemed like their was a khaki-brownish "utility" uniform they wore occasionally.



So, I've decided I like random photographs for my backdrops for the figures.  The paintings don't seem to make the figures "blend in" as well...

Next up, the British archeological team!  Stay tuned...

Nice, except I'm afraid I'm really not convinced by the eyes. As a general rule, I feel that fully painted (that is, whites and pupils) eyes (on 28mm figures, at least) look rather cartoonish, and I fear that this has happened here with your otherwise very well painted figures.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the feedback. So, I would be very interested in hearing from others, too. What do you do on 28mm figs?  Do just a black eye socket?  Or paint it in?  I paint a black oval, fill it in (leaving a black outline) with white, then do a dot in the color.  What do others do for eyes?

I do eyes on most figures; I don't think they look finished without them. That said, the mass of Russian Civil War troops currently marching across my painting table aren't getting eyes, for the most part, although the officers and characters probably will eventually.

I do a single horizontal strip of white, then a black dot centred, then clean up as needed with flesh colours appropriate. No black oval, but you look at it and see "eyes" and your brain fills in the rest of the detail!
