March of the Metal Men
« on: November 26, 2007, 12:46:06 AM »
We ran a Fantastic Worlds game over the weekend...

The Planet Drachius is under attack! Emperor Grimm has sent down hordes of robot minions led by his best scientist X'all X'ante to destroy the force field generator that protects the capital City. It is up to a small force of defenders, lead by the brothers Gabriel and Caleb Starchild, to slow down the metal men while they wait for re-enforcements.

The scenario was played on a 2x2 board. The robot attackers had 16 grade levels of models including Grade 2 scientist X'all X'ante, two grade 3 destructobots, 3 grade 2 Bodyguard robots and 2 Grade 1 robots.

the heroes began the game with only the two Grade 3 brothers on the board. As cards were pulled, more models were brought onto the board, for a total of 12 Grade points. The heroes also had use of the orange Tele-Plants. These plants allowed them to teleport around the board at will. The humans also had 20 hero points from their pool of characters will the robots only had 5.

Part of the robot horde...

limbo does not compute...

More robots!

The generator and the two brothers

Caleb uses a Tele-Plant to get closer

The robots advance quickly

Led by the Destructobots!

Caleb Starchild disables a robot

A wound to the head causes the Destructobot to go out of control and attack another robot. Out of Control robots were everywhere!

The DestructoBot with is Ray Gun eye blasts away at the generator

The players enjoy the intense pulp action! From left, Sean, Audrey, Chuck and Jerry

A second head shot disables the massive Destructobot

Only for some lucky rolling (and a hero point) to allow the robot to reboot and continue it's attack

In the end the proud defenders of Drachius could not hold and their field generator explodes, allowing the full force of the robot army to invade the capital city

All hail Emperor Grimm, the new ruler!

Nice looking game.   Where are the big robots from, the Destructobots? And is Fantastic Worlds close to .45 rules wise, (just looking for an easy way of getting robot rules)?
Just found Super Science Tales: Terror of the Metal Menace, lol  .
He that trades Liberty for Security will soon find that he has neither.

All the robots are from Hydra Miniatures http://www.hydraminiatures.com/

Fantastic Worlds is based on the 45A rules engine, but is a complete game on it's own. It's robot rules are for more reliable futuristic robots rather than the clunky pulp robots of Metal Menace.

I glanced at the tri-d pic on the front of the newspaper, and almost choked on my synthi-caff. "Lorenzo," I gasped, "This scientist looks enough like you to be your twin brother!"
"That is unsurprising," replied Lorenzo Nix, my Retrovian science officer, "We are from the same clone-batch."
"By the Nine Hells of Neptune!" I swore, "That must be embarrassing - your family working for a no-good like Grimm!"
"Embarassment is a human emotion, to which we Retrovians are not subject...but I am...disatisfied with his ethical sense."

Excellent use of Lego!

A fine looking game - scenery & minis are superb and it looks like a great advert for Fantastic Worlds :D

You mock my lack of miniatures.

I'd like to find a good alien/scientist/robot controller figure for when I run the con game eventually.

Only very gentle and friendly mocking, Marc! :-) But there's nothing like making a virtue out of neccesity - I kinda like the idea of Nix's brother being a villain! But if you go to "Moonlight Miniatures" site, they do a line of scientists, one who's gone a bit overboard on the bionic tentacles...

Better watch out though, Marc wants to run a worldwide campaign based on eradicating the threat of Emperor Grimm the Grievous.  :)

I'm thinking of a title like 'Death to Grimm' or something catchy like that :D

Of course he may be just too powerful now and it would be wiser to join  him rather than fight him.
