Beer Truck
« on: 09 November 2011, 10:31:01 AM »
Hey guys I bought a Matchbox Models of yesteryear Mack TsingTao beer truck off ebay. The seller said that he thought it was 1:43 scale, I got it today and I thought it looked a little small. Does anyone use one of these models for BOB? I want to do some BOB gaming in the future and was wondering what these models are like scalewise with BOB figures.

Cheers,

The Breaker.

The Models of Yesteryear series was, AFAIK, an interesting exercise in combining the box scale approach with actual vehicle scales. Vehicles which were smaller in real life (e.g. passenger cars, light trucks) were either 1/43 or 1/50, whereas the larger vehicles, such as the Foden steam trucks (of which I've got a couple), were in 1/60 scale to fit the standard boxes. The latter would have been great with "classic" 25mm figures, but do indeed look a bit smallish next to modern 28s.

A Mack Truck would probably be too large to do in 1/43 to fit the standard box. So you might want to check the underside, usually there is a scale reference embossed on the chassis.

I've always loved the line, but never managed to find the really good ones in suitable quantities for gaming. I once had a Crossley beer truck which I repainted and converted a bit for BoB, but then sold off because at the time I did not actually plan on doing Brits. Obviously, last year when I started an Army of India force, I first kicked myself for this stupidity and then bought a handful of Citroen trucks as they were cheap, readily available, robust and small enough in 1/43 scale to look good next to the woodbine figures I use - they would be better with the even larger Copplestones.

I use LLedo vehicals, which scale well with Empress, Musketeer and wargames foundry, in my opinion. Granted, Copplestone are a bit larger, and so they might look a bit small. All depends on who you want to collect.
Theres more 28mm Superhero Madness at my blog, http://fourcoloursupers.blogspot.com/

Here is a picture of a real 1920 Mack AC truck (Anheuser Busch).  There is a driver in the drivers seat - so you can get an idea of how big it should be, compared to a person.

They weren't huge.

I had one, it's somewhere around 1/72. The Crossley is somewhere around 1/55-1/60 and thus a little more useful with 28mm

Would it be too large for 20mm? I thought I could maybe extend the cab somewhat. that might make a bit of a difference and possibly base it on 3mm MDF.

When I go to the monthly sale in Brussels where I get most of my vehicles, I always take a 28mm figure with me and compare if I see a vehicle I like. If it visually looks good next to the figure, I buy it  (if the price is ok), if not I leave it. I don't care what scale it's nominally supposed to be, because most of them are just not correct anyway.

For my near future, I tend to go for 1/43 because I want to have them exagerated next to the almost 32mm figures we're using for that period.

According to this site the Mack truck is 1/60 scale:

Y6   1913   Cadillac            1/48
Y8   1914   Stutz            1/48
Y6   1920   Rolls   Royce   Fire   Engine   1/48
Y6   1926   Type   35   Bugatti      1/48
Y17   1938   Hispano   Suiza         1/48
Y14   1911   Maxwell   Roadster         1/49
Y16      Scania   Half-Track   Bus      1/49
