70s UFO models? 15 or 28mm
« on: 13 November 2011, 12:39:49 PM »
Somehow I am too stupid to find the corresponding topics...

I got interested in some UFO themed games.
I am sure that there is somewhere a good Shadow tank substitute.
I would also love to have an actually UFO in 1/56 or 15mm (1/100).
Ed Straker's car would also be cool.

Any pointers?
Thanks!
cheers and keep on gaming, Agis - https://www.adpublishing.de

Konami made a UFO model as part of a rage of Gerry Anderson vehicles a few years ago.  Here it is in a poor, hastily-taken photo along with an Irregular 15mm caveman, an Airfix 20mm swordsman and a Hasslefree 28mm policeman.

And here are the same figures with Konami's SHADO Mobile.

To my eye, the UFO looks right for 20mm and the Mobile for 15mm.
Back from the dead, almost.

Revell's Perry Rhodan range for a UFO :

although it's prbably OOP.

Are these fitting for 28mm minis?

The Konami Mobile and UFO will work fine with 15mm scale figs.

For the 25mm/28mm scale figs, I recommend the SHADO diecast vehicles.  The diecast Mobiles can be found out of the UK.  Not sure about Germany.

They've been out of production for some time, so the prices are climbing on these.  eBay is a good source for them, if you can't find them in local toy stores.

Comet Miniatures, also in the UK used to stock some of these, so might have better pricing than eBay.

The UFO and Interceptor diecast sets were going for outrageous sums, last time I checked, e.g. approximately $175 for the set, and that didn't include shipping.

For the 15mm figures, I'm planning on using Ground Zero Games' (GZG) Light Vacc Suit troops for the aliens, and Heavy Vacc Suit troops for the SHADO astronauts.  For the Moonbase girls, I'll be using Rebel Minis' Black Widow Mercs (the ones without the coats).  Haven't found a good substitute for the male/female SHADO Security troops, but leaning towards the Rebel Minis Infiltrators in helmets, and/or Khurasan Minis' Exterminators (these are really for Colonial Marines from the Aliens movie, but seem to me to be a nice fit for an upgraded, military style reaction force for SHADO, e.g. in heavier kit, with military weapons.

Other suggestions for SHADO Security and other personnel, without helmets, or hats, and in tight-fitting, comfortable clothing would be appreciated.  I keep trying to get someone to produce them, with multiple suggestions to various manufacturers, but no luck so far.

Not sure what to use for personnel for 25mm/28mm figs, for SHADO, Moonbase girls, the astronauts, or the aliens.  Matakashi's suggestions were okay, but not quite what I'm looking for.

On the plus side, someone recently released a nice Straker-esque figure in 28mm, so there is some hope in appropriate minis eventually.

I'm interested in any 25mm/28mm figure suggestions too, for the above, but the figs (other than the astronauts, interceptor pilots, and aliens) all need to be bareheaded.

Imai did plastic kits in various scales. I scratched a UFO for a mate some years ago, I used guitar plectrums for the outer disc thingys.

I have a lot of the original Meddings scale drawings for Anderson craft somewhere which I could possibly scan but they may be a bit big.

SHED made a resin kit for the UFO quite some time ago.

It was expensive, even back then, e.g. probably 15 - 20 years ago.  35.00 GBP, plus shipping (approximately 20% more).  It came with clear, plastic, vacc-molded covers for the top and bottom.  Pics of the finished models looked quite good, since the overall UFO design is rather simple.

It would work for 25mm/28mm, and appears to be the same scale as the diecast UFO, at about 4" in diameter.

All of the vanes, and the outer disks (for lack of a better name, or guitar pick shaped pieces) were separate, and made of a polyurethane resin.  The central section came in two pieces, with an upper and lower central hull section.

I've never put it together, but not sure I want to sell it.

If you can find one of those, that might be another option for you, but I don't think they are still being made.  If I recall correctly, SHED went out of business (could be wrong about that though).

Now that I think about it, there was a company in Italy that was making UFO models, but can't recall the name.  Perhaps a Google search would work.

The Comet IMAI SHADO Track seems to be a bit big, or?
6" long...

Is the Dinky One smaller?

Same for me, they are close enough but somehow just don’t really work for me…

On the plus side, someone recently released a nice Straker-esque figure in 28mm, so there is some hope in appropriate minis eventually.
That is one of the reasons I get excited about UFO again, the Crooked Dice Man From 2000 is spot on for Ed!

Some thoughts for 28mm proxies, then.

SHADO personnel:  Reaper Chronoscape GUARD agents, Marvel Heroclix SHIELD agents, Artizan/Copplestone "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" henchmen in boiler suits, Crooked Dice henchmen in boiler suits

SHADO astronauts: Crooked Dice Albion Rocket Consortium - moreSpace 1999 than UFO, true, but a similar vibe

Moonbase personnel: Crooked Dice femdroids (I seem to recall that they had plans to bring out a suitable replacement head)

Aliens: the hardest one.  Horrorclix Evil Cosmonauts or Black Tree Doctor Who Alien Ambassadors (3rd Doctor) might be usable as starting points for conversions.  Or just use a Black Cat Bases cat!

Agis - very excited to hear you are planning something like this!

Figures
There is the Zombie Astronaut head which might work as a possesed astronaut. Armed ones planned for next year.

http://www.crooked-dice.co.uk/store4.html

However, they are out of stock at the moment(!), but there is a head swap thread on the CD forum which might get you some.

If you want some basic troopers, could I be crass and suggest these - 2 similar female figures out in January too:

Vehicles
If you are after some UFO style space craft then the Pegasus do this kit - which might not work for purists, but I kinda like:

Product Enterprises did the best 28mm scale SHADO vehicles IMHO. Google 'Product Enterprise SHADO 2'. I have some scale pics somewhere which I will dig out.
