Woodbine New Zealand Rifle Section, 1915.

The new Osprey MAA book on the New Zealand Expeditionary Force is pretty good, chums. Mike Chapell's excellent illustrations are an inspiration.

Wow :-* indeed.

Seems a pity to point out that, beloved as it is of figure manufacturers, the lemonsqueezer didn't come into widespread use with the Kiwis until after 1915. Woodbine's fault not yours.

More outstanding painted minis.
The Woodbine figures look great.
May have to check their figures out at their site.

No.... do point out this sort of thing. You are quite correct. Lemonsqueezers were issued in 1916 to the NZ Division on the western front. Slouch hats were the order of the day in the Middle East and indeed were the headgear of choice for the Mounted Rifle regiments and other NZ troops in that theatre right through the war. However, I am only a humble painter and I paint what my client has commissioned me to paint. A bit of gamer's license here, I think, as I believe these figures will be used for gaming scenarios post 1918, hence the distinctive headgear.

Absolutely superb! You have a brilliant style that works so well with these figures.

Re the hats - this was discussed when I posted so pics of my attempts at painting these boys (I don' have your style and skill I'm afraid). The story is the lemonsqueezer was worn by Kiwis at Gallipoli and before but mostly by the Wellington Battalion. It was adopted officially in Jan 1916 by the other NZ troops.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=30944.0 As I said here all manner of headgear was worn - caps, tropical helmets, bush hats etc. I've even seen a photo of Aussie Light Horse (in the Osprey book ANZAC infantryman 1914-15) and one is wearing his hat lemonsqueezer style.

Look at photos of the Kiwis and you'll see that slouch hats, when worn, are overwhelmingly in a style like that of their  trans Tasman cousins. Either way, the lemon squeezer does readily identify them as Kiwis, or perhaps, tooled up  boy scouts.
