15mm German tank hunters
« on: 21 November 2011, 01:50:39 AM »
I am working with an newly-acquired airbrush to try my hand at the ubiquitous German try-color camouflage. I've been practicing on some 15mm StuGs and a Jagdpanther. Hopefully these can get me ready to repaint my Tiger 1E's.

For dunkelgelb, I used Panzer Ochre from Vallejo air. The camo green was Tamiya OD, and the brown is Panzer Brown also from Vallejo air.
The next step was a filter of a watered down Gyphonne Sepia wash from Citadel, then a spray of gloss varnish (pictures did not come out of this, sorry).

Up next is the pin wash on the varnished hulls, gunmetal onto the tracks, and either an attempt to hand paint the markings, or, if funding allows, decals.

C&C welcome.

I think that those look very good. 15mm scale has it challenges but you've nailed those paint jobs nicely.
Looking forward to seeing the Tigers!

Great Job.
The Stug 3 ausf G is my favourite medium tank. I collect german too, but in 20mm, and I should to paint my stug.
Congratulations.

Thank you! This project loosely follows the guide set forth in "for the love of painting" post on the FoW forum...

Added the sepia filter, then gloss varnished. Follownig the varnish I added a very thin wash of a very dark brown (1pt black india ink, 1pt sepia wash, 10+pts water)

With this dry I've added the metallic paint to the tracks.

1st StuG III G with filter, varnish, and pin wash

2nd StuG III G with filter, varnish, and pin wash

Jagdpanther with filter, varnish, and pin wash

And as a sort of a control group, I've also been working on one more StuG and a second Jagdpanter, with two tone camo (only dunkelgelb and green). These were washed without the varnish step, but otherwise are being finished the same way as the first three vehicles. When both sets are done, I'll decide which method to apply to the Tigers. Also note that the zimmerit on the Jagdpanter is sculpted onto the hull in green stuff.
This Jagdpanter's scheme was inspired by the vehicle in the IWM in London.

As always, C&C welcome.

I see what you mean about the tracks, and they sure did photograph pretty bright. I may want to repaint the tracks in more of my standard weathered track style - they'd be painted dark brown, washed black, highlighted back to dark brown. Then a wash with an orange-brown, and a final highlight with a  pencil.

Nice work! I agree with dirtying up the tracks a bit. I love that you are not only doing these with airbrush, but that you are doing some pretty sophisticated stuff generally reserved for modelers in 1/72, 35, 48 scale....pin-washes! Awesome!!!
