1889 Confederate Cavalry
« on: December 03, 2011, 03:17:48 AM »

Figures by Perry Miniatures. Converted and painted to tabletop standard by me.

Note the brave few who carry anti-steamtank torpedoes.  As my VSF Confederates army is pretty much straight Deadlands, I figure that having more than a few weapons that can go horribly horribly wrong while trying to write home to mama cannot be a bad thing...
You, sir, are not allowed to attempt a takeover of the solar system until your octopus sobers up.

Lovely Froggy. I'd love a close up of the goggles. They look fantastic. And maybe a quick tutorial on how to do them? Thanks!

For the goggles, basically put a ball of putty over the eyesockets and then punch it with an old 10/0 brush ferrule - I ripped out the bristles when one of them died, as they are wont to do.  Painting was a lot simpler than what I do for just one mini - paint brown-black, drybrush orange-brown, dot blue on the glass, dot white in the upper left of the blue.  For the horses, I just used bronzes instead of the brown.

Does that help?

Really cool, the color scheme is great. Plus, much better than 'tabletop standard' as you have said, at least from what I've seen on the tables :)

Well thank you kindly!

I learned to paint among showcase painters, not primarily gamers, so that's what I'm always comparing my stuff to.  It's a completely different language - I can do "ok" in the showcase world, but have no idea, for example, what will appeal to folks in the LPL.  By "tabletop quality" here, I mean that I drybrushed a lot instead of three+ stage highlighting, though I did a bunch of washes on the horses.

This is neither good nor bad, it just is.  Still, thank you!

These look great, Froggy!

Thanks for the inspiration, I will look back at these when I FINALLY get around to doing my own VSF forces.
I have a way to go yet, but have all the component parts for my CSA cavalry riding alien mounts, so just need to pull my finger out and get my current project 'finished' .
(Is there such a thing as finished?)
This is one of the units I am most looking forward to doing, and your tip on the goggles is most appreciated.
Thanks!

Wonderful. I will be stealing this! Thank you!

As will I. That is a great idea for goggles!
