Russian colour photos from 100 years ago.

Not really military but interesting none the less.

The central Asian pictures in particular are hopefully of some use.

Well, I may come out the dick for saying this but I think this is the third time these have been linked to at LAF. Not that I mind, I find these absolutely fantastic in all their photoshoped glory.

At least the third time. However, they are not photoshopped, but actual period colour photographs. (On a few of them you can actually see where the layers have not been aligned correctly.)

I did not know them! Fascinating!

Some houses on these photos will be much easier to build in 28mm than the logcabin I have been trying to make! >:(

I've seen these before but had forgotten about them.

Nicely timed too, as I'm about to start a few buildings for an RCW hamlet and was looking for inspiration.

These seem to be a partially-new set! There are quite a few repeats but some new ones I've never seen in here before. I once built a sawmill inspired by the one I'd seen in a previous series (due to gaming needs and materials on hand, mine came out quite a bit different in the end).

Here: I think this is the other version of the series. Many more pictures there!

There's a few pictures that may be of more particular interest to folks here for directly gaming-related stuff, like the river sailors or the Austrian prisoner-of-war camp. But it's really an incredible series as a whole.

Seems like Prokudin-Gorskii really tried to range as far as possible, going in all cardinal directions, taking pictures of shops, farms, cottages, churches, dignitaries, workers, tribesmen, industry, cities, towns, the countryside, and so on. When you think there's only a little over 80 images between fantail's link and mine, you realize how diverse the pictures are for such a small number!

I wonder how many more there are?

"I wonder how many more there are?"

This LOC site says 2606: but obviously not all are digitized.

To the photos:
Colour brings life. Some of these images look so contemporary, one is obliged to look for the anachronism.
Wow.

There are distinct themes:

I've searched the whole lot, and there are lots of rivers and railroads, and precious few roads.

The really annoying bit is that all the military ones were destroyed when he left Russia. So virtually no soldiers are seen.
