miniguns in 15mm ?
« on: January 02, 2012, 06:59:17 AM »
I've got a friend who wants to make an AC-47 "Spooky" gunship in 15mm.
Biggest problem are the miniguns.
Thought I'd ask here if someone knew of a manufacturer that sells miniguns.
Thus far I found a US special forces with minigun from thesceneuk and the armoured truck from Skytrex (although a bit pricey for just 2 miniguns...)

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons,
for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

Could you get away with a Tau Burst Cannon?  These pop up on eBay often as 'bits' and may be available at a local club / GW store.

Only four barrels and may be too big though!

Way to big indeed.
found this :

If that 2.13m is the total length, I'm estimating the barrel length shouldn't be more than 1,5cm.

S&S do a minigun in 7.62 caliber for 20mm scale, I think that should do well for your Spooky.

Wonder if one of these on Shapeways could help:

http://www.shapeways.com/model/243215/

http://www.shapeways.com/model/308553/

or even http://www.shapeways.com/search?dos=1&shapewaysSearch=minigun

Could not find any close in the 15mm SciFi ranges as possible vehicle mounts - how about 20mm modern day weapons?

Just to say re: thesceneuk 15mm miniguns, I've used them on my moto-terminator conversions, at £1 ish a piece I can't say they break the bank to be honest????  :?

They look good though, give em another go.

Guys, the options you are giving would look like a a-10 Warthog gun sticking out of a old Dakota in 15mm...they are all way too big!!

At that small a scale, why not just bundle some wire together and make a few from scratch?

My suggestion was 15mm! Prehaps he needs to go 10mm if bits exist, maybe brass tube/plasti-rod masters and cast em up in resin would be the way to go?

The M134 (which he needs) isn't that big to begin with, and I was talking about the people mentioning 28mm scaled weapons, not yours. S&S makes it in 20mm, so it is just slightly overscale for his 15mm needs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minigun It only needs to be as thick as a 15mm troopers upper arm. So in that aspect even the 15mm Scene offering is too big.

Of course, as you mention, the budget version would just to bundle some wire. After all, they are not that visible on Spooky.

Get some AH-6 helo's in 1/72. They're pretty cheap (got me an Italeri one about 6 months ago for just € 5,00) and most have a choice of either the TOW pods, or 7.62mm miniguns. A single kit has two of them, (a Spooky had 3?) so you might need 2 kits, but like I said; they're pretty cheap, and the scale should be about right if you're doing 20mm guns in 1/100...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...
Find a Way, or make one!

Thanks guys,

lots of usefull info.
As wayswatcher said, the M134 was a small caliber minigun, so 28mm is definitly a no go.
As for the 1/72 barrels, the cobra only has 3 barrels. However, you did make me google and I found this :
.
Scratchbuilding is a good idea also, but in the end, it will be the friend's decision.

I am away from home right now - so I can't get the exact measurements but several of the UH-1 kits in 1:72 scale come with M134 miniguns (as well as a few other bits that might come in handy).  Can normally pick the 1:72 kits up cheap, and it was common enough that local hobby stores often have them in stock.

If you take a look around you can also find GAU-17s for model ship builders (used as anti-missile/torpedo guns).  I know I have seen them in 1:100 scale for those - though I can't seem to find the supplier right now.
