Wreck-Age Demo Board Commission WIP
« on: February 24, 2012, 02:10:50 AM »
A few months ago I was commissioned by the guys over at Hyacinth Games to produce a demo table for the official launch of the futuristic post-Apocalypse game, Wreck-Age. With everything that's happened in the past few months, it's been difficult to get started but I've finally been able to get started.

For those not familiar with the world of Wreck-Age, it basically breaks down as, in the future, the rich and powerful decide to build a bunch of spaceships and leave the Earth behind after having polluted and used up all the resources they could. Inevitably, they leave all the poor and working class peoples behind and that's where the game occurs - a game centered around eking out a life in the polluted wastelands of a future America.Mostly, it reminded me a lot of my trips down Route 66, specifically western Oklahoma with it's many small concrete and iron bridges. My idea was to go for a sort of futuristic Dust Bowl feel - a community of farmers (known as "Stakers" in the Wreck-Age fluff) struggling in a ravaged American Mid-west, but in the future!

Normally, I would start on the table itself but Chicago weather in January and February makes working outside nearly impossible at times, so I started on the terrain itself - a Staker community made up of a re-purposed gas station, a fortified farm, and a couple small shacks.

There's still A LOT to be done, but there are more detail pics and inspiration on my blog below:

It looks simple, but very effective.  8)

A great looking bunch of wip shots.  I rather like that sepiatoned look instead of normal grayscale.

Particularly like the rout 66 fuel sign.

I like it, I was thinking of Using some plasticvile apartment duplexes I have sitting around into a repurposed staker community, who used the old city park near by as there farm land, and local convince store as the local market. :D

I like this a lot, some rather clever use of cheap and simple materials, and yet achive exactly what you wanted to depict. Great inspiration. Good stuff!

Thanks all, should have nearly complete terrain pics up by this weekend.

very nice ,canīt wait to see them painted .
where do you get the Route 66 it is very nice.

The "66 Fuels" sign was inspired by the giant Rt. 66 museum sign in Elk City, OK.

I sketched the half the shield shape out on a piece of paper folded in half so, once unfolded and transferred to the foamboard, it was symmetrical. The shield is 1/4" foamboard cut to shape, foam edges sealed with acrylic modeling paste. Lettering is simply plasticard cut to shape (french curves are god-sends!). The support posts are brass rods shoved into the foamboard edge and snapped off.
