1946 Battle of Athens, Tennessee
« on: March 26, 2012, 07:53:19 PM »
A veteran friend of mine sent me a link to a clip from the movie about the August 1 & 2, 1946, Battle of Athens, Tennessee, between WW2 veterans and other town folk versus the corrupt political machine that controlled McMinn County, Tennessee. A miniatures scenario based on this would be a good excuse to use some old car and truck models:

Interesting!

Is the first time I hear of this. in spite to the fact that I live in Athens (Greece)

You are right an interesting scenario.

I believe the bombers were used for surveillance but did not drop bombs.  Those (including gas apparently) were dropped by private pilots in their own aircraft (essentially mercenaries of the air.)

So a block of frozen urine/extrements that's being dropped by an airliner makes it a bomber  o_o

It was not a bomber (as in official military terminology) but ad hoc adaptations of private/commercial aircraft that were used.  Private "terrorism" before the term became so common.

Political corruption, the southern USA? Nah, that would never happen.

Political corruption is a universal trait found world wide.  Hitler, Stalin, and Pol Pot are more popular images that come to mind but I suspect we all have people (work, government, business, medicine, the church,) that we know are breaking laws and standards for personal gain.

I would reference mankind's fallen nature but some would complain about "religion" (which would be implicit in "moral failings" but I won't... oops, already did.)

Glenn

Agreed, it is a universal given. The difference is that those in the US tend to get popularised by turning the story into a movie, while in the UK, there's usually a resignation of some minister or other after questions being asked in 'the house', along with a front page story, then it all gets brushed under the carpet.

Personally I like to watch the movies.  :)

An interesting story, to say the least!
It's quite likely this incident provided more a bit of inspiration for 'Under the Dome'...  lol
Are there any suitable figures for those veterans in 28mm?

Not that I'm aware of. I've been wanting some post-war US civilians etc, armed or otherwise, for a while now. If you aren't too fussy you could probably use some 'Gangster' era minis, but most of them are very 1920s in their style of dress.
