Afghan regular army uniforms ,3rd Anglo- Afghan war 1919 ?
« on: March 28, 2012, 07:55:23 AM »
Hello,

I believe the Afghan regulars wore a khaki- browwn  tunic with stand collar, breeches , puttees , a low black lambskin cap and brown leather ammo pouches.

Does anyone know if there are any photos of regular Afghans in 1919 ?

 Pat.

This is the only photo that is clearly of an Afghan soldier from this war that I have seen. By his look I fancy he's a militiaman rather than a regular, so it's of little use to your question, but the photo is perhaps worth posting anyway, simply for interest's sake...

I believe the photo was taken during cease-fire negotiations or after hostilities had concluded, hence his armed state next to an unconcerned Tommy.

There's also this...

The caption for this is "Afghan peace delegates reach the British lines." The two on the left are clearly Afghan bigwigs, I would be hesitant about trying to identify the others. Are they Afghans or British Indian troops escorting them?  Fellow with the white beard in the centre doesn't seem to be wearing an Indian Army uniform (and, well just sorta looks Afghan). The chap with the slouch hat might be a Gurkha or a Garwhali, I dunno. Someone with more info on the ins and outs of the uniforms of this time might be able to help.

There is an old Soviet film.
He said: "The mission in Kabul."
The film tells about the first Soviet Embassy in Afghanistan. There are many scenes with the Afghan war in 1919. Afghan army uniforms, in the opinion of experts, the film shows the high degree of certainty.
Alas - the film is only available in Russian, but free:

Also, I just today posted on its online information describing the Afghan army, drawn up by the Russian general Snesarev, which consisted at that time serving in the Red Army.

3rd Afghan War is very, very high on my project lists - I already have suitable British troops, need some Indians and of course Afghans and Pathans.

Does anyone make 28mm figures that could, with maybe a bit of greenstuff and some paint, pass as Afghan regulars?

The closest uniform and kit wise would be Schutztruppe askaris, I think, as long as they don't have the 1909 ammunition pouches. You'd want ones with the earlier sort. And of course the heads would have to go, which would be slightly problematic what with the neck curtains.

The Copplestone ones would be best, as they aren't laden down with tons of inappropriate gear, and they have the old-style pouches that resemble the ones the Afghans had. Then you need to find some heads with a fez or some other kind of simple hat that could be greenstuffed into a lambskin hat. Gripping Beast sell separate fez heads for their Ottoman Turks, need to check them for size against a Copplestone, though.

That's the best I can think of at the minute, but there may be something more straightforward that I am overlooking.

If you don't care about the ammo pouches looking right, you might be better off fiddling about with some WW1 Turks' hats. Less work, but those ammo pouches would annoy me.

Just found a description of the chap in the photo with the fancy feathered hat. His tunic was dark green and his befeathered helmet was brown. Reckon that would be a pretty cool conversion to do, for use as a command figure.

In reply to HM Stanley:
Tiger miniatures had some 28mm Afghan regulars foot and cav, in both Turcoman and Beehive hats, although they are no longer available from Tiger we still have a stock of them.  If you are interested please email me richard@recreationalconflict.com for the particulars of what is in our stock.

Hi

Not sure if anyone is still interested in this topic.  Have just found this link which shows Afghan army in 1920.

I did quite a lot of research oin this a few years back, including all those photos mentioned above.  A useful book is Herberts 'Risings and Rebellions', published a few years ago by Wargames foundry.  In there they show Afghan regular infantry wearing (roughly) Turkish uniforms and lambswool hats.  Gripping Beast Turks work a treat, as they have interchangeable heads.  I used the ones with caps and had them painted as lambswool ones.  If you wanted to go the full hog you could get the greenstuff out, but I dont think there is a need.  Will try and poast a few pics if I get a chance over the next few days.

The militia wore broadly tribal outfits with bandoliers galore, as per the photos above. All seemed to have bayonets on their rifles as well
"...and as always, we are dealing with strange forces far beyond our comprehension...."

All limitations are self imposed.  Work hard and dream big.
