I just received Wings of War - Dawn of War - the WW2 set.  Will open the box tonight to see how (apart from the types of airplanes) it differs from the WW1 game.

Please, let us know. In the meantime, I'll start lobbying for my nearest game store to start carrying WoW!

All my planes arrived today, and all I can say is "Bloody hell they are smart !!", they are superb marketing/sales items, well painted, well packaged, all the bits you want to play straight away.

I wish other manufactures would take a look at them and present their products in such a good way.

Oh, and the games good too  :D

The WW2 game - Dawn of War - expands on the Wings of War concept by adding some new features such as speed, aiming, ace pilot characteristics and ground attack.

Instead of placing 3 maneuver cards, players place only 1 maneuver card, and one acceleration or deceleration marker (or none at all to stay at the same speed).  Each maneuver card has 2 sets of arrows - and the player uses the arrow that matches his speed for that turn.

Aiming - if you are shooting at a player for the second consecutive turn, then the target player draws additional damage tokens.

Ace characteristics - if you have an ace pilot in your team, he can have special characteristics like acrobatic, daredevil, good aim, and so on.

Ground attack - gives you the chance to attack targets on the ground.

Recovery - after performing some rigourous maneuvers, a player has to take some recovery counters, which are discarded one per turn. (eg an acrobatic ace may perform another non-straight maneuver directly after an Immelmann.  But in doing so, he takes 5 recovery counters) If a player has a recovery counter, he cannot perform another rigorous maneuver until he has fully recovered (ie all counters discarded)

Altitude (as per WoW)

I think this new game would be great with 1/144 minis using those extendable radio antennae stands!

You can download the rules here:

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/PDF/DW_Rulebook_EN_web.pdf

BTW - you get all the cool WW2 early planes like Spitfire, Hurricane, Me109, Zero, Dewoitine and so on

Slightly off topic.

To go with my rising interest in WW1 air war, Teutonic efficiency will produce sometime this year the movie "The Red Baron". Some trailers already available on youtube:

The word that springs to mind is: WOW!!!
"And Lo, thou shalt close your legs in a snapping action whence your miniature slips from your hand when you are painting. And the paint will be fresh, and your trousers will be soiled, but you will smile - because the mini was saved"

Actually no, but I for one am more than happy to trade historical correctness for a sensual smorgasbord of canvas being torn asunder by spandaus vomiting lead :D

I figured historical accuracy went out the window from the trailer. That seems like an awfully overcrowded sky...

New stuff to come:

Finally, there’s a ton of Wings of War items spread throughout the coming twelve months:

    * February—Flying Legend and Eagles of the Reich, two booster packs for the WW2 series; also, a miniatures package of WW1 airplanes
    * April—Immelmann and Dogfight Squadron, two booster packs to add more planes to the WW1 series
    * June—Fire from the Sky, a new game set for the WW2 series; also, a miniatures package of WW1 airplanes
    * October—Flight of the Giants, a new game set for WW1 that introduces a nunmber of bombers
    * December—Balloon Busters, a boxed set of WW1 miniatures that will include models for Drachen Caquot/AE800 and Nieuport 11 in two different painting schemes

In addition to all of this, Nexus is taking a cue from its line of WW1 miniatures for Wings of War and releasing a series for WW2. The 1/196 scale pre-assembled and pre-painted planes from the first years of that international conflict will be sold in complete sets and as individual planes. The first release will include the Supermarine Spitfire, Messerschmitt Bf 109, Mitsubishi A6M2 “Zero” and Grummann F4F-3.

Hi,

I found the cheapest Hindenburg so far,  The Revell MiniKit. I planning to use it in my games. There is also a Fokker DR 1. The quality is lower than WoW's own, but the price tag difference is significant.

Here is a comparison photo:

Grimm got me addicted to Wings of War
I´m now the proud owner of a deluxe box and two additional planes: Ollieslagers´ sopwith snipe and Rahn´s DR.I.
Even my wife played a game with me.
Luckily she shot me down.

I made a pdf with photos of all planes from series 1 and 2.
Also you can see wich manouvre-deck and damage-deck each plane uses and how many damage points it has.
