Need Ideas For Cities Of Death Terrain
« on: 05 April 2012, 05:40:55 AM »
Im starting a project and even from the conception/design stage its gonna be MASSIVE and the problem is the city is seperated into 3 sections, the 1st section is civilian witch isnt hard (im using citadel scenery) just regular cities of death type terrain but the second section is military and im stuck for ideas on what to populate the sector with, I have already drwan up plans for a HQ, Arbites Precinct and an armoury as well as a few bunkers, bastions and the fortress of redemption will probably be there. It doesnt necesarrily have to be military more noatble buildings like an embassy and A church/ chapel (hey i just gave my self a few ideas). so my question to you guys is do you have any ideas for me.

Good concept.  My suggestion would be to make something completely unique.  Make it a portion of a city on a hive world.  In the 40k universe, many human cities are hives.  Densely packed cities that have been built on top of the ruins of the old cities.  Necromunda was made for gangs fighting in the underhive (lower portions of the city).  I have not seen anything like a Necromunda hive city for use with the 40k rules.  It would be unique and I think pretty cool. My two cents.

Factories. Military quarters of cities tend to have ammo factories, foundries, warehouses etc. The Royal Arsenal is a good example with rows of buildings, both administrative and production.

So many projects..... so little time.......

My city is actually based on Minas Tirith its going to have 4 lines of Defense the first 2 lines of defense are like the ones in the modelling masterclass book at the end the Vraks Battlefield with like the bunkers and defense line in front of the fortress  except my wall will be 4 foot long inside the first wall will be a huge amount of terrain for city fighting. The Third line of defense will be another wall and like on Minas Tirith it will be ontop of a sort of cliff rockface thing and inside this wall will be all the military stuff i was talking About. And the final line of defense is going to be like this

complete with the bridge connected to the military zone and complete with secret entrances and whatnot. Im real sorry if none of this post has made any sense because i have really no idea how to explain it you have to see what I see if you wanted a full view of what was going on. worse i havent got a job coz im to young and i dont have really any skills to scratch build terrain so this is gonna take me at least a year to finish.

OK, I'm not having a lot of luck visualising what zones are what.

You have a habitation zone, which as Snitchy suggests can be set up as a hive-complex; you have a military zone, which can include things like ammo factories as Dewbakuk suggests; and you need ideas for a third zone, is that right?

If you have an industrial zone, you can have other (non-military) processes. Pipes, pumps, gas and liquid (promethuim, oil, water) storage tanks, refineries for oil or promethium, de-salination plants, fractionating columns; or ore-processing and foundries not under military control - the Imperium has great trading houses, perhaps House Atrebates (or whatever) has a 'company quarter' in the town where their commercial enterprises are based, whatever they are; maybe you could actually do a commercial sector with shops, a market-place and warehouses. They almost never appear in people's 40k scenery - mostly it's churches and bunkers with the odd factory chucked in, it's difficult to know sometimes what everyone in the Imperium does except fight and pray.

Then there's food production of course. OK, most of that will be outside the cities I'd think but maybe your third sector could be some form of agricultural zone with alien plants and some processing machinery.

Or, you could really start going outside the box and make it a pleasure garden for the city's elite; a zoo or arbretum, a sculpture-park, with lots of religious and martial statues all over the place, a palace-temple to the Imperium's fallen heroes, or whatever.

So, civilian zone then military zone then another military zone? The only thing i can see a Space Marine mega fortress as, is a military zone.
If that's the case, then bunkers, chapel for them to pray in, parade ground, landing pad for Thunderhawks, an area for the vehicles of the marines to be serviced and stored (motor pool), Defense lasers/missile pods and a communications array. In my understanding all space marine bases are fully self sufficient so maybe some sort of fuel storage/processing plant and some food manufacturing as well?

Well  its not neccesarily a space marine fortress or a military zone its more like a medieval keep where everyone runs to when the city is overun but like in Minas Tirith im going to add a central courtyard with a tree. the military zone is a collection of buildings dedicated to war effort while the civilian zone is purely civilian.

Also does anyone have tutorials on how to hinge doors on terrain and where i can buy Pegasus Gothic terrain because i cant find it at all and does anyone have any recomends on where else i can buy gothic terrain.

I have also decided that the basic wall not including the height of the watchtowers will be 10.5 inches tall witch is I think the same height as a fully erect Warhound titan and the watchtowers will go up another couple of inches.

The war hound titan will actually be able to walk into the city through the gate witch will also be wide enough to fit 2 land raiders abreast. the second wall will actually have two gates both smaller than the first only barely able to it a  Bane blade through it.
