The BoW writer probably meant to say "flora" but since these are probably more @ sessile fauna really, it's not a big mistake:

All the same, they would seem to be best for seriously weird alien environment, say the accursed planet Yuggoth where "black rivers of pitch [...] flow under [...] mysterious cyclopean bridges" and the landscape alone "ought to be enough to make any man a Dante or Poe if he can keep sane long enough to tell what he has seen"...
