Need some help- British Army Nurse Uniform of the 1920's
« on: April 24, 2012, 08:47:56 PM »
Does anyone have any links to what the Nurses of the British Army wore in the 1920's?

I am having trouble finding pictoral references.
I only have one to paint, but would like to get the colours right.

The Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps (or Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service, as it was known then) is what you need to be looking for... these are WW1 uniforms, but I doubt they changed at all.

Thank you, Arlequin!

I did manage to find some photos, but none in colour. (Hardly surprising!)

Much appreciated!

which figures are you planning to use?

I only have the one.
This one from Pulp Figures;

http://www.pulpfigures.com/catcode.php?range=Personalities&code=PHP&number=6&custID=941931631961335360439

I realise that this may not be entirely accurate, but it is going to be the Medic for my British based Strange Aeons project, M.O.O.S.(E).;

I will follow the colours as much as I can, as I would like it to be as accurate as possible for the period, but probably paint the cloak on the figure in a khaki colour to blend it in with the rest of the group.

Thanks for highlighting this firm as I had never heard of them. Looks like some very useful stuff for VBCW.
Love the flat wagons with the guns on them.
I must agree with others that their web site is very poor and I'm sure if they put some time and effort into it, any cash they have to pay out to improve it would be covered in a few days as I'm sure the orders would flood in.

Was this supposed to be over in the Scheltrum releases thread, flatpack?

I knew I had this somewhere, but it took some finding.

Scans from an A2 chart: "Cut-Out No 2 - Uniforms of Women's Units of the British Army 1909-84", which is an odd sort of source, but since it was published by the National Army Museum ((c) 1987) and drawn by Bryan Fosten, it's probably fairly accurate.

And anyway, if Plynkes can use cigarette cards as evidence, I can use card cut-out dollies!

Back from the dead, almost.

Thanks, Steve F!

Much appreciated.

Card cut-out dollies are most welcome;
Now all I have to do is shrink it, print it and fold it around the figure.
Perfect!
 ;)

As an aside on the evidence front, I turned the TV on the other day and Upstairs, Downstairs was on.
It just so happens that the scene at the time had nurses helping the troops disembark when returning wounded from the trenches.
There seemed to be quite a bit of variation in the uniforms, but that may have been down to the costume department having to lay their hands on so many at once....
A strange coincidence as I would not have, ever, chosen to watch U,D.but was very happy that I caught that scene!
 :)

The last series of Downton Abbey had lots of WW1 nurses, if that's of any help...

Sorry, I forgot to mention that OldGlory has a nurse in their WW1 range, which might be helpful:
http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/proddetail.asp?prod=WWI%2D314
that's the british set. They do have similar packsfor american, french, german and russian.

Although I have these OG (german in fact) I do not have the Pulp nurse in order make any comparison but I am afraid that the OG will be a little smaller.

BTW in case you need any american, canadian or greek nurse you may substitute the gray colour with blue and you have them.
a couple of australian one :
http://users.skynet.be/fa068453/SRD/nurse.html
and a reenactment aussie:
http://www.curryww1.com/theaustralian-WW1-re-enactment-team.asp
Sorry, about the above a minor problem would be the size of their skirt.
As alternative you may increase the number of nursing sisters by using some of westwind nuns!

Another option I found is an artizan lady (Miss Greentree PLP043) which can be painted to some german auxiliary nursing unit, why not for an english with an armband and some colour uniform for a walking out dress?
the ATS driver from Artizan might also be used, ignoring the completely wrong hat for this purpose (her hat is suitable for army, ATS and WAAF).  A proxy alternative is to substitute her head with a head coming from Geezers range WPC -if check first the scale and size .
Alas, I do not know any other suitable figure, maybe the manufacturers sculptors etc consider doing some. They would be popular!
