Quick Halo-esque conversions
« on: 20 May 2012, 11:04:56 PM »
While I should have been painting last night, I instead started messing about with some old Robogear trooper bodies, Pig Iron heads, and various other bits and bobs from the workbench. I am pretty happy with the results and may do more. I don't mind the huge physique of these models, as they can represent Spartan-like genetic super freaks.

So many projects..... so little time.......

Here is another trooper experiment. This guy was tacked
together in minutes to see whether the RG bodies would be effective in creating true scale marines. I rather like the effect and may make a Death Watch Squad in this fashion.

true scale

Please excuse my ignorance, but what does "true scale" mean?  Is it a synonym for "in proportion"?  Or, as it seems to be from various GW knock-off manufacturers use of the term, a euphemism for "whatever size GW is using this month"?
Back from the dead, almost.

"True Scale" Marines are conversions that gamers have done (with varying success) to make the marines 'in scale' with other 40k stuff. Fluff wise, a human figure should come up to the chest on a marine as they are huge. GW thought it would cause a visual imbalance on the figures so made them all about the same height. Also, back in the early days when the decision was first made, they didn't want to make Marines far more expensive than other races... How things change :)

Nicely done.

I have some old Robogear figures and might try something similar.

Good point. Those cheap robogear troopers are ideal to make true-scale space marines, being both far better proportioned and taller.

The Pig Iron heads look lovely on them, too (those heads are just like bacon, they make everything better lol).

Nicely summed up. I have never been in love with the idea of true-scale Space Marines, and while there are some very artfully done conversions out there (see http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery-search.jsp?dq=true+scale ), it never seemed to me to be worth all that effort. Still, the Robogear conversion is quick and easy, and even if I sculpt embelishments onto the armor, it will be a very minimal investment of time to bang together five or ten for some Kill Team action.

Being reasonably well qualified on the subject matter (;)), I have to say these work quite well, a little static, (as lets face it those bodies were awful lash ups - I've binned many! ;)) but with the pig iron heads definately improvement. If you added some combat gear to the thighs that would deal with the very slim waist issues.
If you want a few decent weapons then Heresy carry a shogun and some las guns that aren't out of place as spartan weapons.

Good luck

Thanks, CV! I had the same thought about using pouches and other kit to bulk up the waistlines. It's too bad the Pig Iron pouch sets are so pricey; I will probably just put them on with brown stuff.

Cheers!
