Toy AFV. Is it just too big for 28mm?
« on: 05 June 2012, 11:55:07 PM »

Hey I recently picked up this toy AVF from a "Victorious Mission" military playset for $8.00.  It came with a number of other uselful bits that I have already started working on.

Here is a back shot.

Anyway it's fairly large 8"x3.4" aproximately or 21x8cm.  It's bigger than any of the other AFVs I'm using in the setting so far but it doesn't seem too large compaired to some of the other tanks and troops transports on the market for 28mm.  Also the Super Heavy vehicles are not that uncommon for Sci-fi.  I'm just looking for some feedback.

Judging by the seats in the back of it you'd probably say it looks about right. At least in the angle of yr photo. And in all seriousness can you really imagine 10 fully armoured space marines with all their equipment, plus 2 more as crew, fitting into that rhino?  :D

It looks too big, specially if compared with the other tanks pictured. The figures would fit there, of course, but in real life that kind of vehicles tend to be really cramped and smaller. But maybe you can keep the turret/wheels for a future project and transform it into a small combat dropship or something?

I'm planning on doing the same to this:

It's a 1:35 model and in size is similar to that toy of yours.

Yes, real world military vehicles aren't quite as big as some miniature gamers like to believe :)

From whence the problem with this particular one: it's fairly recognizable as something that's not 12 meters long IRL. In other words, it doesn't really look like a superheavy scifi vehicle to me, but of course you could make modifications.

Hello again, IW.  Check mine out.  :)  I actually have a thread about Dollar Store toys here.

I have the same LAV!  I chopped off the turret and put a scaled down one instead.  My LAV conversion is called a " M44 Beowulf MCC (Mobile Command Center)"  It's used to bring battallion support staff, command/control options and a host of improved capability to the battlefield to support troops on the FLOT.

I think you could instantly descale it by removing the turret. Or something. Or just make it the 'ultra version' of the regular version.  lol lol

And for me, looking at the seats is what tells me it is way too big and out of scale. Also, that the figs are smaller than the tires doesn't help the case any either. :-(

I've also considered taking the turret off and turning them into a mobile M.A.S.H. unit.  Also they could make transport vehicles.  I may just mod the weapon/turret.  Haven't decided but I have to consider cost.

I used a 1/35th LAV (minus turret) as a C&C vehicle for my Imperial Guard for years - I think the trick is breaking up the recognizable outline slightly, and finding a role which it will work in.... maybe as some sort of sci-fi exploration/mining command and transport vehicle, drafted into militia service?

Completely agree, drop the turret or use smaller cupolas with gunners mounted on them

Here's what I have so far.  I stuck with the turret because I'm trying to keep the cost down and my other solutions were going to cost me extra in bits.  Doesn't do much good to go buy a $15.00 bit for an $8.00 toy project.  I tried to strip it down and add a more futuristic gun.  Going to add some more techy details to the whole thing.

I'm torn because it's reasonably sized...and the Warhammer Rhino is one of the most hilariously mis-scaled vehicles in the history of gaming (yep, sure it holds 10+2 8" power armored super infantry...no problem...)

We have plenty of gigantic over-sized vehicles here on Earth so why not elsewhere?

they sit on each others laps in a Rhino.

No, the marines stand up and lock the mechanic muscles in their armours' legs, attaching themselves to the floor using magnetic soles.

Anyway, that APC is looking great as a skimmer. I wouldn't worry too much about the hatches, although if you have some suitably-looking bits available, maybe some tech gizmos added for interest? Satellite dish, a little camera turret or something. What are those "grille banks" on the sides, if I may ask? Those would be very useful for a variety of purposes.
