Wargames Soldiers and Strategy magazine Issue 61
« on: July 01, 2012, 12:02:06 PM »
Just a quick note to all Colonial players that the new issue (61) of WSS has a Colonial theme.

I have painted the cover vignette, which is the 'Last Eleven at Maiwand' and have written an accompanying article. In addition, there is a general intro article to Colonial gaming (more for the uninitiated, obviously) plus 'Colonial Saga', which looks at using Saga rules for Colonial games - not as daft as it sounds - a great article and I'll be trying this out for sure!! There is also an article about Fashoda in 1898 and an Anglo-Zulu War article.

Overall, a really good read...

Attached photos are taster - some of the photos I took of my vignette before sending it to the magazine. The mag has some lovely shots taken by a far better photographer than me, with some cool 'work in progress' pics as well along with my painting guide for creating the vignette.

I'll not say any more about it here. Please buy the magazine for more info on how it was painted/put together.

Cheers

Andy

Lovely painting Andy

The first time i've bought WS&S and [because?] it was full of Colonial articles.

I even got a name-check  :D

Has to be the best mag on the market at the moment, especially with articles like this one in it, great stuff!

Been a follower of Wargames Illustrated since the beginning but as time goes on I find myself picking up WSS nearly every month now, an excellent magazine especially this month. The Fashoda  article has sent me off on yet another tangent :)

Am I right in saying those wonderfully painted miniatures are Empress Zulu War British? How much conversion was required?

You are right!!  ;)

Not much conversion...it's all in the article, so I can't go into any more detail here, sorry  ;)

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments, by the way. Much appreciated  :D

Fantastic vignette :-*

The one great thing a bout WSS is the centre spread on the 'how to' for the cover.

Nice work Andy, and a great issue.  I subscribe to WSS and this is the best issue for some time, unfortunately having a theme is really hit and miss if the readership has no interest in the topic of the month.  However in this case they hit the nail on the head!!

Great article and vignette.

I've struggled to find a reason to buy the Empress Zulu war figures, as to be fair you will need 'fousands of 'em', ahem, but the 2nd Anglo Afghan war conversions look top hole and I may now have found a reason for the purchase.

Excellent work that man.

Glad you gents liked the issue. The Colonial SAGA rules are designed to be generic, Mark is working on a Mahdist set which will probably be better for Afghans.

As for British troops and Afghans, I received some samples from Ironclad Miniatures, British and Afghans for this period! We'll have a review next issue...

I have to say I love the magazine. Prefer it over WI and am thinking of dropping WI.......except they had a good painting article this month so will keep it on for a while..... The vignette article was great Andy and the pics look even better on here!
