Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie
« on: 04 July 2012, 12:37:21 PM »
My first ever unit for ‘big battalion’ type games.

A battalion in the pay of the Dutch United East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, or VOC) around the 1780s (time of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War).

I only know of one image of VOC soldiers from this period, and have tried to replicate the uniforms: http://www.atlasofmutualheritage.nl/detail.aspx?page=dafb&lang=en&id=3053
Figures are American militia from Foundry, which have a nice ‘ragged’ look of the European units in India.

Regimental colour is invented, inspired by real VOC flags as seen here:

Whole idea inspired by GreatWhiteZulu’s wonderful Golconda blog.
I told you so. You damned fools.

Also an interest of mine. Hell I even considered PhD work in the VOC.  Great work.  I am very interested in the opponents that you paint up as well.

Great work! There aren't many people with VOC armies, so that makes this even cooler!

What are you talking about, the VOC is primary school level.  lol

Lovely to see somebody taking this piece of history for his miniatures.

Thank you, I am always looking to add units to my "Indian" Armies or the period.  The link to the flags gave me ideas for some units for my VBCW uits as well.

Thanks for the comments chaps. Unsure on opponents at the moment, either British or Indian. I'm working on clearing my painting backlog right now, so don't expect to see them anytime soon!  ::)

Only obscure from the Anglo-American perspective!

True, but that does seem to be the dominant theme in wargames.

Very nice...never seen miniatures painted like the VOC, now you should also do the WIC and you'll have both.

I really applaude the effort of doing this. What a glorious piece of our history it was. And there are so many aspects to it that you'll never exhaust it. If anyone from abroad is interested in this and finds himself in Amsterdam in the future, let me know. As an amateur historian, i give guide tours through Amsterdam (and other cities) and musea/exhibitions and also one that goes into this period of Dutch history. With lots of detail and background information that is left out by all the other tourguides. When interested send me a pm.

Nice work indeed. Personally I prefer the WIC, at least they get their comeuppance in Brazil. Still, I love the old part of Recife and with out Maurce of Nassau the city would lack much of its character.

Haha, must admit it was somewhat of a toss-up between the two, but India just seemed to provide far more opportunities (and elephants!).

We'll see...  ::)
