events for dungeon crawls?
« on: July 06, 2012, 10:04:11 AM »
Hi, I'm putting a dungeon crawl game together - I'm thinking of .45 adventure's event cards and looking to build a fairly generic set of event cards for dungeons, and I've come to you looking for inspiration / suggestions.

I'm particularly interested in "old school" fantasy standards, but am open to any and all ideas...

I've begun the list and have cards prepared for things such as:

Pit traps (I have cards for different depths, and even one with spikes)
Treasure chests (trapped and un-trapped)
Monsters (thinking I should prepare specific monster tables - may change this to make quicker games in the end so have cards for all monsters I have painted and ready to use)
Corpses (you know, for flavour)

so any other ideas? what do you think is essential, or indeed not essential but fun in a dungeon crawl...

Prisoners to aid (or slay, for nefarious purposes if a necromancer is in the party).
Trapped beasts (if the heroes release the beast, there's a 50/50 chance it'll fight for them. If not, it attacks.)
Gates that close shut behind the adventurers when they enter a room.
Cave-ins that have to be evaded, and which block the exit route.
You can also substitute chests with lecterns, shelves, armour racks, weapon racks etc for variation.
Horrible sounds far off, which affect the heroes' morale.
Magic fluctuation (magic is more/less powerful for a X turns)

That's some, off the top of my head.

Trapdoor on the floor leading to... A hidden crypt, a prison, a sub-dungeon....
Toxic spores
Mushrooms
Rats
Bats
Witch
Well/Pool
Chasm
Prisoner

thanks for these, all helpful.

I didnt say, but I will find a way of hosting these if anyone wants a copy - I'm designing them for BASH! fantasy but I'm sure they'll be fairly generic and adaptable to most systems..

Magic circle - Any magic user has his/her power increased or decreased while in the room.

Storage - Adventurers can explore and find torches, rope, or anything the DM decides is useful for the adventure.

Secret passage - Only this card unlocks the next level of the dungeon.

Keys - Adventurers find a bunch of keys. May be useful, may be not.

Magic pool - Anyone who drinks from it feels... (DM previous decision)

Just some from the top of my head.

Hope you find some inspiration for your games.

Best wishes.
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

No Warhammer Quest gamers in here? How else could you have possibly missed the dreaded Portcullis and Wind blow (Lantern goes dark)

OK we had those closing gates already
Far less active than I used to...

Yeah, I was thinking of the portcullis but couldn't find the word for it. =)

Read this!

How's about -
Pits to negotiate
keys/rings to open locked doors/magical barriers
immobile skeletons clutching tempting items in their hands, which of course come to life if said item is stolen
areas of intense heat/cold that affect the characters' stats
rust monsters ate my sword!
cursed magic weapons to be discovered
unstoppable zombie horde - the heroes must retreat and find another way whilst keeping ahead of the horde
fellow dungeoneers who may or may not be trusted

Hope there's something of use in there!

"Rocks fall, everybody dies!"

"Rocks fall, everybody dies!"

personally I'd laugh if that happened to me, but I know some wouldnt!

(I have put a rockfall in, but given a chance to dodge it, and although it does fairly hefty damage, its possible someone might survive it... If that happens I'll stifle my tears and carry on!)

Pressurized floor tiles that release a hail of poisoned darts when the tile is depressed
Yearly painting challenges only show me how useless I am at painting...

Oh that's actually a very old joke. It's code for "The GM has given up on this game".  lol

Have you ever read "The Dungeon Master of the Rings"?

I really reccomend it, just for fun, but for some "GM moments" that are true gems.
