Morrowind style dark elves?
« on: 04 August 2012, 06:55:59 PM »
I don't like starting threads to ask for suggestions for figures any more, but I've looked high and low to no avail.
Myself and my brother have started playing Battle Company games using the Lord of the Rings rules and figures from GW, all of which I've had tucked away from when the game first came out. I quite fancied starting a company based on the dark elves from the Elder Scrolls games, but after seeing how much the game has changed and how different the boxes of figures are I'll stay well clear of GW.

Here are a few pictures to give you fellows an indication of what I'm looking for
http://images.uesp.net/e/e7/MW_Armor_BonemoldGah-JulanM.jpg

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:MW_Armor_BonemoldM.jpg
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:MW_Armor_ChitinM.jpg

Any suggestions are appreciated, whether they are for fantasy figures or similarly styled historical figures (I won't shy away from a bit of conversion).

No suggestions unfortunately but I loved looking at those pics again for nostalgias sake. Hope this project goes well as i too am thinking about Elder Scrolls based skirmish games. Was thinking Skyrim-wise that the Gondor and Rohan dudes from GW would make good Imperials and Stormcloaks.

There was actually an ordinator miniature produced for the Morrowind collector's edition. Unfortunately it was a bit too large (and scarce!) to be useful. It was about 32mm scale.

Ahhhh, what a beautiful thread to see on such a fine afternoon~<3
I've been a big fan of the Elder Scrolls fantasy universe since I picked up Oblivion, and after recently playing a bit (not enough at all) of Morrowind, I have to say that it's the most beautiful, alien, unique and mesmerizing place in the TES canon so far if we leave out what snatches we've heard of Black Marsh.
Hell, I'd consider it the best fantasy setting ever written.

I can't really think of any minis that represent Dunmer armors well, but I can give you one link that MAY prove useful.
http://www.veltd.net/28mmclanwar.htm
I was browsing Valiant's Clan Wars/Five Rings pages some time ago, and couldn't help but notice that many of the Asiatic warriors, scribes and other people resembled Dunmer in ways of fashion and facial features. The Scorpion Clan has some models that would pass for Orsimer/Dunmer wearing Orcish armor from Morrowind.
I can't guarantee you will find a good amount of things to use, but it's some of the only help I can offer at the moment.

I wasn't aware of that Ordinator figure...

That is lovely. Shame about the scale and (I assume) poor availability. I agree by the way with everything you said about Morrowind. So weird and alien. I was a little disappointed with Oblivion at first when I started playing it but it did grow on me after a while. And I absolutely love Skyrim though it's still not quite as good as Morrowind. Unfortunately for me I cannot play it at the moment for I own a PC copy but a few years ago switched over to a macbook (I produce music so I needed one for a piece of software called Logic). Still holding onto the game though as I'm planning to grab a PC desktop at some point.

Thanks for the kind wishes! I'll post any developments here, so hopefully I'll pass on some ideas.
I can really see the Rohan soldiers working for Stormcloaks.
For Imperials you could also look at Warlord Games' plastic Romans!  ;)

Oh, if only...  :(
You're right though, that's too large and too rare to be a practical option.

Glad you appreciate the thread!
Oblivion was a good place to start, sometimes accessible isn't a bad thing.
How much Morrowind is enough? With how much there was to see and do!
Morrowind was my introduction to the Elder Scrolls and I was hooked from the start.
That is what I love about Morrowind so much, just how unique and bizarre the world was.
There was jellyfish drifting around in the sky, they made houses out of crabshells and rode around on the backs of giant fleas.
I've got quite homesick (you might say) playing Skyrim with all the mention of Morrowind across border!
It really was something else!

And thanks for that link! The Dunmer look different to typical Dark Elves and don't resemble any army from history, so any and all suggestions are appreciated.  :)
There are some interesting character figures there alright, the resemblance of some to the Dunmer is striking.
Especially some of those narrow featured fellows in the Crab Clan.
Just a shame they're a bit too pricey to build up the rank and file of the battle company.

Still holding onto the game though as I'm planning to grab a PC desktop at some point.

Good thing you hung onto it, the game is proving pretty tricky to find these days!
I've turned the house upside down looking for my copy and still no luck. TO EBAY!  lol

If you mean getting ahold of a copy of morrowind, you can get it from Steam.

During the past few days I've been going through all my best sources and slightest mini leads, and I'm sorry to say that I can't find very much for this project.
A small few Reaper dark elves have armor and outfits that could compliment this project with heavy conversions, these guys, for example:
http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/dark%20elf/sku-down/14571 (netch leather?)
http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/dark%20elf/sku-down/60072
http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/mantis/sku-down/60049 (I don't see A LOT of use for these, but their armor does seem to be composed of insect parts)

It doesn't seem realistic at this point that you'll be able to get a big rank and file army going - the best you could hope for is probably a skulldred warband, or something for some other small scale skirmish game.
You could try looking for post-apoc figures, because some already have goggles and garb similar to dwemer, netch and chitin suits.
I think your safest bet is to keep looking at oriental fantasy lines. You might have some luck with the Dreamblade figure lines, but I'm only saying that out of desperation, and I'm not very sure there's anything Morrowindish or Dunmeri in there - it just feels like the weird fantasy aspects would match up with Morrowind, if only a little.

Converting figures with closed faced helmets to dunmer troops wearing bonemold armor probably wouldn't be very difficult at all. You'd just have to layer on some greenstuff for pauldrons and mess with their helmets until they match regional town guard, then texture it to look rough and worn all over. You'd finish that off with the incising of a few swirly runes into the breastplates of the armor, then by painting them a dull, flakey yellow. And if the figure has greaves that don't agree with you, give it a long ceremonial skirt.
It wouldn't be too hard to make this:

look like this:

Hope you can make headway in this project, it's a cool idea. Good luck.

Basiliscus, you just keep delivering great posts. Thank you!
My favourites were always Redoran, but at this point I'll set for any House (except Hlaalu... or Telvanni  lol)
My intention was never a whole army, simply a company of 20-30 men.
I have a cunning plan up my sleeve, which I will fully explain when I get back from a spot of business in Bristol.
I'll also get cracking on some building plans!   ;)
Once again, thanks for the input.

Generally speaking? Yes.
With the Dunmer? Not really.

Sorry for the major delay, Basiliscus.
Emigration is a time consuming process!  lol

But I have been mulling over the ideas for Dumner.
I think the best thing to do is to borrow some ideas from the Dunmer for the Dumner, instead of replicating them.
It's a compromise I don't like having to make, but I honestly don't think I could do them justice.
I was considering getting the War of the Roses infantry from the Perrys from some light infantry and unarmoured types.
Then for armoured infantry I was considering repainting my Easterlings in orange and blue!
Something about their armour just seems to fit.

One thing I couldn't possibly pass up is making some Vvardenfell terrain though.
I'll copy the Dren plantation.
http://images.uesp.net/a/a9/MW-place-Dren_Plantation.jpg
That should give me a good supply of buildings to reconfigure as I want into towns, hamlets or plantations.
