Atlantis Devil Fish Minisub
« on: 24 August 2012, 03:00:09 AM »
Some of da boyz from HotLead up here in Stratford, Canada, are toying (!) with the idea of running a VSF naval game this Spring. Never one to want to be left behind in port, I got an early start and built the "Devil Fish" Atlantean minisub. It started life as the "Trafalgar Law Submarine" kit from Bandai. I can't recommend this kit highly enough. Its designed to be build either as a surface ship (with water-colored wake included!), or fully submersed, with a water-colored stand for those of you who prefer deepsea adventures.

Taking the surface option, I filed off a number of small portholes, added a conning tower, 4 view ports, the devil image on the front of the bow, and rebuilt the stern (a very minor conversion) to include a hatch, two small ammunition lockers, and deck ray gun. The crew are 28mm Foundry Greeks from the Jason and the Argonauts range.

The next step in the project will be to build some  Atlantean "marines" (sword and ray gun) and possibly a manned torpedo. Rumours of dolphins carrying teller mines are, however, too far-fetched to even begin to consider. Now C4 carrying kamikazi Carp on the other hand....

Did you do a version with debris strewn across the surface of the ocean?   ;)

Fits the bill  8)

Maybe a dark wash and a white drybrush on the waves would help  :)

Cool, we need pictures of the game when you play it too!!

For some reason your sub and Atlantians make me think of the old BW Flash Gordon programmes! I think your ship looks like the spacecraft from it!

Bravo!
Love the sub and also the Atlanteans. Gives me an excuse to buy a box of plastic hoplites.

Are your Atlanteans heavily Greek-inspired?

If so, I'd love to be within dice range of you with my VSF Romans.
You, sir, are not allowed to attempt a takeover of the solar system until your octopus sobers up.

Froggy, your beautiful VSF Romans would be an honour to cross swords/spears/pila/ray guns/tesla cannons (choose one!) with any time. ;)

Cheers,
Dan

Oh, now Froggy will have to find something appropriately nautical.  lol

Mayhaps, rivet up a trireme?

Viper4Dan, is the ship glued into the wake? Can you pull it out, say, to add the under side?

You know that kit would would make an interesting Nef as well.....

Truly! Almost Jabba-esque, and I love Barge and Skiff conversions to 'nefs!

Not too keen on that which is slung underneath, though.

...
Now C4 carrying kamikazi Carp on the other hand....

Just make sure they're trained to home in on OPPOSING ships; WWII Soviets made some nasty mistakes with their mined hounds...

The_Beast:

The whole original kit snaps together, and the wake is a somewhat flexible plastic sheet that fits over the sub and just as easily pops off. For that matter, you could use the kit for an undersea adventure, then surface, remove the bottom half of the sub and pop on the wake. Bandai has a few boat kits in this range that are like this. Great potential. You could even flip the bottom half of the sub over and make a second type of ship as well.

Sorry to keep coming back with questions, but the original seems to have three 'levels', and your ship has just the two. Simple 'tower' you don't put in?

Any one have an image of the kit on sprue? It DOES look like lots of fun possibilities.

So much fun I'm afraid to investigate as to prices.  :(

Doug

Edit: Never mind; finding some images. IT HAS A SAIL???  :o
