More Russians! Now on blog
« on: September 04, 2012, 01:53:21 AM »
Forming up under the one remaining eye of their commander Mikhail Kutuzov

the Russian army is ready to take the field:

4 Line Infantry, 2 Jaegers, 1 Grenadiers, Light Artillery (6-pdrs and 1/4 pood unicorns), Horse Artillery (same), Position Battery (12-pdrs and 1/2 pood unicorn), Lithuanians Uhlans, Elizabethgrad Hussars, plus some support from the medical services:

I'd like to add some heavy cavalry or maybe a sotnia or two of Cossacks, but I've realised I'll need to paint a French army to face them as none of my usual opponents have anything to match!

That's an impressive force. What are the figures? Perry? I like the wagon too, is it from the Perry range?

Most of the infantry (5 units, including he grenadiers and jaegers) are Perry.  I mixed in a couple of metal command packs to provide some variety but the rank and file are plastic. The two other infantry are Old Glory second edition.  The foot artillery are also Perry.  The horse artillery, hussars and uhlans, plus Kutuzov, Barclay and Bagration, are Front Rank.  The medical services are Perry, and the casualties are Warlord:  I bought one pack of Warlord figures and was pretty disappointed in the quality, so decided to wait on the Perry Russkis before starting on the infantry!  (it is telling that the best of the casualties are the ones lying face down!)

Cheers,

W

Always nice to see an army laid out like this.  Very inspiring and well painted.   :-*

Tell me about it! Two units out of eight Russian units painted and no cavalry touched yet!

Pavlov - now why does that name ring a bell?

The latest addition to the Russian army - the Pavlovski Grenadiers!  The figures are by Warlord, with flags generously provided by Iain of Flags of War.  I was originally biased against Warlord after painting the Russian casualty set (the face-down casualties were the only ones I liked), but decided to give them another chance as I got a deal on the box set.  I was pleasantly surprised and I will recommend Warlord's plastic Russians.  I painted these guys through December and thought of them as my Christmas elves, with their green coats and red, pointed caps.  Except that Santa's elves are less likely to stand up to Napoleon's massed artillery than the Tsar's elite killers!

Very nice figures and great inspiration for me to continue painting my own Russians.

I painted a battalion of Warlord Russians. Nice figures by themselves but don't go well with Perry. The Warlord Russian kiwer are huge and look comical compared to Perry's more "natural" look. I think the Warlord Russians would look better mixed with Front Rank.

Cheers

Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly
down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red
Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture,
torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals.

And now the heavies!  Here are Perry Russian Cuirassiers painted as Military Order Cuirassiers.  I love these figures, and the black and white uniforms are very striking.  I want to do a second unit of cuirassiers - my original plan was to get Foundry or Front Rank cuirassiers, but Perrys' look so great that I think the next unit will be the same again (although a different regiment).

Thanks, Fuzzy, good advice.  I think I have enough infantry for now.  I've got a unit of Opolchenie on the painting table, and once they are done I'll take a break from painting Russians (unless I cave in to the desire to pick up the new Perry skirmishers and casualties), so no danger of adding more Warlords to this army.  I think.  For now, anyway!

What a fantastic army, not sure how I missed your original posting but I will now be following with a great deal of interest.

Nice work!

With the next unit, why don't you try painting them a very, very light cream-white? When one looks at reenactors photos showing "white" uniforms, the clothes are not snow white, but cream-white.
