Tai Ping rebellion
« on: September 15, 2012, 10:00:27 AM »
Here is the beginning of my Tai Ping rebellion project.

This is a unit from the chinese Green Standart. I plan to paint a complete army.

I'm currently rebuilding my tai ping army, addings troops and flags to existing units. I have also to matt varnish the EVA and other foreign units like the Shanghai militia and the franco-chinese force of Kiangsu.
After having done this, i'll turn myself towards the anglo-french army who took Beijing in 1860. The french are already painted. Still need to do the english and sikh units  ;)

Looking good. It's nice to see the old Foundry Taiping range brought back to life. Michael Perry sculpted some very fine figures there, well up to his current Perry Mins standard (the fact that they tend to be 26mm rather than 28mm notwithstanding)

Nice looking unit.  Certainly a neglected period worth more attention.

Very nice indeed,

What are they based for?

Probably yet another 'new' set of rules that I haven't purchased?

sigh!

They are based for no particular rule set but all my figures are based on 6cm front bases. Regulars are 2,5cm deep and irregulars/hordes/artillery on 6cm deep bases (in case someone ask, cavalry is on 4 or 5cm deep bases  ;)).
The "6cm" comes from complicated calculations made a long time ago by one of my friend so that a unit of miniatures occupies the same space on the gaming table that the same unit of real men on the ground.
The half bases are here for the base with the commander to stand in the centre when the unit is in line.
As all my figures are based the same way, I can use any ruleset. I have played with PRINCIPLES OF WAR, PIQUET and now turn myself towards BLACK POWDER  :)

Very nice stuff!

You don't see this conflict in miniature too often.

Bravo!

Excellent miniatures. I have a small mountain of these that I expect will never see a paintbrush :'(

Glad to see that Foundry are resurrecting all of these old ranges.

Indeed, it wasn't until WW2 that the human race managed to accumulate more deaths in one conflict. And from what i've read, most of the weapons used were swords and bows and arrows. Firearms weren't THAT common.

But as you say, it remains a very little written about or explored period of history, so much so that the last time i was in China, and asked locals about it, NO ONE knew anything or had even heard of it!

I guess the cultural revolution and its following years have made a lot of that countries history 'lost forever'....

I am currently reading "Autumn in the Heavenly Kingdom" by Stephen Platt.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Autumn-Heavenly-Kingdom-China-Taiping/dp/0307271730

It draws on a lot of chinese material and is very detailed about the actions and movements of both sides - very interesting read so far.
