Basing ... and scaling
« on: March 05, 2008, 02:25:22 PM »
So ... I have finally bought some pulp figures (from Rattrap to be exact) and since they come without any bases, I was wondering which kind of base I could use for them. Since the only other miniatures I own are Warmachine and Hordes minis, which come with slotted plastic bases, I have no idea what to use. The WM bases seem kind of too large for this, especially for someone like Jade Hood, who is pretty small.

Richard was so kind to suggest metal washers or pennies ... but I have no washers handy right now, and I am somewhat reluctant to use money. I thougth there might be some base manufacturer. Everything I found so far was not was I was looking for (back-2-basix, microart).

And something else. I already asked this in another thread. 1:48 to 1:52ish is around the best scale for 28 mm figures, right? Cause I have a 1:72 Spitfire Fighter plane model kit at home ... and comparing it to the four Rattrap Figures, it didn't seem that far off ... My question is, can I safely use the 1:72 model or would it be totally out of scale? I'll provide pictures of the plane, once I have assembled it.

Hey Rufus.

If you think it looks the right size, then use it. Nobody can agree on what is the correct "scale" for 28mm, and each company seems to have slightly different ideas of what constitutes 1:48 or 1:72 anyway. if you like the look of it, and your gaming buddies don't laugh at it the first time you use it, then it works.
 :)
As to bases, I use washers for my Pulp minis. It saves a lot of cutting and filing to get an integral base to look right on a palstic slotta.

I can get a pack of 25mm washers from Wilkinsons for about 60p, I think there's 10 in a bag. depending on where you are in the world, there should be local alternatives.

EDIT: If you want plastic bases though, EM4 sell them by the bucket load:

You can get washers at Bauhaus, they sell them single at my local one.
5 Eurocent coins are also a good option, I use them for most of my stuff. Can't see a reason not to, easily available and cheap.

The more luxurious version is

Or get some GW 25mm rounds at the local shop or ebay.

There's a trend to use 1:56 as scale for 28s which works quite perfectly.
1:48 should be ok for a plane on the tabletop. 1:72 might look a bit tiny but hey, it's your table so use what you want

Satan wants us to use plastic slottabases. A pious man uses 25mm washers.

I use both, plastic for my weird war stuff, and washers/pennies for my "proper" wargaming stuff :)

Thanks for the advice guys. I have now bought 2 of these:

and will try to base the Gargoyle and the Jade Hood on them. I'll post the results here.

Oddly enough, usually a metal washer costs more than 5 cents, so, strange as it may seem, it should be more cost-effective to use coins.

You are correct, 20mm washer costs me 3 pence (could use a penny piece and do on my BoB figures) 25mm washers cost me 7 pence (could use a 2 pence piece)

Unfortunatley we in Germany are forbidden to destroy money (and I'm pretty sure using them as base counts as such), so being an upstanding citizen, I stay with the washers.

I use 1 pence pieces most of the time, they are the right size and I like the price. The big Renegade Miniatures fatties go on 2 pence pieces, as they won't fit on the smaller ones.

In Britain you aren't supposed to deface coins either. My argument is that I could easily remove the coin from the figure, scrape off the modelling putty, clean it up and still use it as currency.
