Wooden guns
« on: September 28, 2012, 03:52:56 PM »
A silly idea to improve role-playing in our next pirate game:

King Louis XIV has decided to dramatically reduce fundings (because of the economical crisis etc) so my Governor character told his carpenters to make some false guns:

These guns will be placed on the fortress, mixed with the real guns. Players will be told that, yes, everyone knows that some of the fortress guns are wooden. This is not a secret. But which ones? Any gun (real or wooden) placed in the fortress on the gaming table could be any of them and not what it looks like.

The plan of the real and false guns locations will be secretly written on a piece of paper, and only shown to players whose characters will come near enough to have a close look at them. If there is a fighting, I'll replace the real guns and wooden guns on their real location according to the secret plan.

During our American Civil War these were called "Quaker Guns" and were sometimes used by the Confederates to make it appear as if a fortified defensive position was more heavily equipped with artillery than it really was.

During the Spanish control of the New World they would often send a ship to the Americas which had many guns, most of them to be left in the colonies as fortress guns. The return voyage could be undertaken with an ability to carry far more gold and other treasure. With this in mind we have played several Elizabethan Sea Dogs games where it has been one player one ship. It is fun to see/hear the English Captains tell each other that the mighty Spanish ship with lots of gunports is really defenseless and full of plunder, yet not one English player wants to go close enough to find out.
