So, tell me about Cthulhu gaming
« on: 01 October 2012, 02:43:34 PM »
Greetings folks. I've read much Lovecraft (starting 30+ years ago) and it's something I re-read every now and again including some of the modern Lovecraft inspired fiction. So I have a general idea of settings, locations, concepts etc...

What I'm inquiring about is: How is it gamed?
Are we talking RPG, card games, skirmish type gaming or what? I have a preference for skirmish. RPG is long in my past and I'm not keen on card gaming.

So is there any sort of Cthulhu skirmish type game out there?

Cheers,
IanKH

I think Strange Aeons might come close to what you're looking for. There's a sub-board that deals with the game.

The board game 'Mansions of Madness' also uses miniatures, and I think it's got a good 'Cthulhu-flavor' to it.
I like my games like my orange juice: pulpy with no added sugar or artificial sweeteners

To be fair, there's also a Lovecraftian supplement for the USEME system, but I have no further information on that.

Thanks guys. I've heard, of and wondered about, Strange Aeons but I wasn't sure what type of game it is. I'll have a closer look.

As a huge Lovecraft fan and an old RPG player who has been gaming in various forms more than 25 years have to chime in and say in addition to the mini rules mentioned there is a role playing game "Call of Cthulhu" made by Chaosium: http://www.chaosium.com.

This has to be one of my favourite games ever - spans different ages - 1920's (the original setting in main rulebook - think detectives, explorers, gangsters and everything from Lovecraft stories/Cthulhu mythos) and then other supplements that cover 1890s (Cthulhu by Gaslight - think Sherlock Holmes, Jack The Ripper), modern times (Cthulhu Now), modern conspiracy (Delta Green - think X-Files, government secret agendas, aliens etc), old Europe (Cthulhu Dark Ages- think knights etc), Roman times (Cthulhu Invictus)...

The 1920s era as stated is the original one with the majority of supplements and sanity blasting world spanning campaigns like "Masks of Nyarlothotep", "The Spawn of Azathoth", "Horror on the Orient Express" etc. Also has supplements on all the HPL mythos locations including Insmouth, Arkham, Dunwich etc

If you like modern conspiracy then Delta Green rules are worth tracking down - although the original ones are very $$$.

Call of Cthulhu system works on % rolls although there have been d20 versions/supplements etc that have emerged in recent times. I think they also sell pdfs as well these days..

Again if you are an HPL fan and game you have to check out the RPG - amazing system and really evokes the sanity blasting hopelessness that HPL writes about! Could be used for inspiration/rules for mini games as well...

enjoy!

For skirmish gaming I too will vote for Strange Aeons. It's a great system with some rpg-lite feel to it as well.

If you want another option for RPGs, I'd suggest the Cthulhu book for the Savage Worlds system. I have a copy somewhere but am unfortunately drawing a blank on the actual title of the book at the moment. :(

I have been pondering:-

-From Charlie Stross' Laundry Files books, Rainbow Six style action in which 21 Special Air Service Regiment (Artists) (Reserve) battle mythos threats. So like the first level of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, only instead of a nuke in the container there is a summoning circle and suddenly the ship is overrun with Deep Ones.

-For that matter, a riff on Stross' A Colder War http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/stories/colderwar.htm , in which when the Russians come at the Fulda Gap in World War III, they come behind a wave of Shoggoths. So M1 Tank Platoon/Team Yankee/Chieftains with Shoggoths.

-Something like 'The Objective', in which a Special Forces team in Afghanistan stumble on an Ancient Evil

in

-Achtung Cthulhu!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modiphius/434365823?token=4c5c9dfd

So Wolfenstein/Medal of Honor: Airborne/Call of Duty: World At War with Dimensional Shamblers. Or Delta Green WWII.
