Tutorial for a flexible gaming mat
« on: October 06, 2012, 09:19:47 PM »
Hi all,

since I'm no friend of modular terrain (I don't like the gaps between the small tiles, and with large tiles I have storage problems) I have over the last years optimized a technique for flexible gaming mats with acryl.

They look rather nice (in my opinion)...

...can be simple rolled up for storage ...

...and can be very easily changed in their topography by simply placing books or similar items underneath it. I have now made this new mat...

And written a complete tutorial on my new blog: http://tobispaintpot.blogspot.de/2012/10/a-new-horizon-tutorial-for-flexible.html

I hope you like it. Take care,
Tobi

It looks really good, especially the way you arranged the terrain on it on the two photos.

These mats do look great.  I have been lately thinking about how I could do something like this so I will check out your blog with interest.

Thanks for the tutorial! How did you model the shore that appears in the picture of the partially-rolled mat?

outstanding stuff... looks lovely... do you fasten the mat down for play as well? or does it stay flat on it's own after being rolled?

That´s really really cool! :o I was looking for doing something similar since a lot of time and now I know how it has to be done  ;)
Using canvas is very smart, by the way! I didn´t think using it but it seems so obvious now  lol

Amazing work - you make it sound so easy.  :-*  :-*  :-*

If you don't mind I have a few questions: -

Is the canvas you use what artists would paint on or is this a different type?

Does it matter what type of flock you use? Are certain types better for this method?

Does flock continue to fall off after it dries and when it is rolled?

For your desert mat, is appears that you have used little flock. Does the sand have to be particularly fine to adhere? Did you sprinkle it just like the flock?

Regarding the large screw and washers you use to pin the mat to the table - can you camouflage these when playing?

Sorry about all the details, but this method is something I've wanted to try for a long time now.

This is really good and very helpful, thanks. I too would be interested in the type of canvas used. i.e. is it artist's canvas or more like a tarp?
