Forge Father Iron Ancestor (Warpath)
« on: 10 October 2012, 09:12:10 AM »
We've just been building Mantic's Forge Father Iron Ancestor, and have taken loads of pics and size comparisons which you can see here:

http://gravengames.co.uk/forge-father-iron-ancestor-review/

We like this model and feel like its got quite some conversion potential. It would also make a good stand in for a Warhammer 40k Dreadnought, or may be of use to anyone who remembers the Squats! We've only seen them painted in the blue/silver colour scheme on Mantic's site, has anyone tried anything different? Would love to see painted examples and/or conversions if you have them!

Thanks

Looks like a nice simple kit.  Two things.

1) Mantic needs to learn how to box things.  I hate their flimsy boxes with the useless 2mm thin "foam padding".  Personal rant.

2) Mantic is so incredibly hit or miss with their designs.  Certain models are brilliant, others are awful.  This one..."meh", yet they have a bunch of beautiful Dreadball figures.  I wish they'd become more consistent.  Their dwarves in their fantasy line are particularly terrible.  :-X

I agree with the box problem. I like the idea of the plastic boxes that double as storage boxes, but my first one  broke before I even got any figures into it!

As for the "hit and miss" design, I put it down to growing pains... hopefully as they develop the quality will rise consistently!

What a beast! I thought they would be the size of Exo squats, but it is huge!

I am considering getting some for my squats.

Edit: I see now on the mantic page that this is a vehicle, I thought it was infantry model, woops. Still cool though.

Anyway, I find Mantic's stuff fairly hit-and-miss. Where they copy something obviously, I get annoyed when they fail to improve or innovate on the concept of what they're copying. This Forge Father Iron Ancestor however is quite a nice nod to the original Squats whilst still being an evolution (since they never had anything like a dreadnought); it's therefore one of the newer models put out by Mantic that I quite like.

Looks like removing the hammer head and adding a nozzle in its place would make an easy conversion to a flamer.  Thanks for the review.   :)

Glad you like the review guys, and its good to hear how people are using these kits in different ways! I've got 3 Mantic Games kits in their plastic boxes and each one seems more than durable enough for my needs, so I'm surprised to hear people have had problems with them.
