15mm Space Frenchies
« on: 06 November 2012, 01:01:15 PM »
At the cost of a now aching back I've finished my 15mm Space Frenchies.  The models are from Rebel Minis and are high quality casts with a nice amount of detail.  Shown here are some of the Earth Forces infantry and heavy weapon teams.  While my painting isn't the best quality I'm still happy with how they've turned out.  Next time though I'll not mix up the heavy weapons.

Very nice! I like the color scheme...

Have you washed these at all, perhaps with something like Devlan Mud?  It might help to accentuate some of the details.

Sorry but these are really poorly painted.

I know that 15mm is smaller and therefore more of a challenge but I have to say that you look like you've dunked them in thick paint... I know you said they aren't the best quality but a lower standard PJ shouldn't be sloppy.

The close ups look like you stuck basing material to the miniatures legs but rather than clean it off just painted over it?

Try by all means to wash them down, but I really would suggest you start these again with a little more time, a little more patience and prep and thinner paints.

I have these minis and they are beautiful little sculpts so give them another go.

Sorry if that seems harsh but no point telling you they're wicked cool! when aren't. There are plenty of 15mm how to's out there. Dropship Horizon will give you loads of tips.

Good luck, (genuinely).

No problems... they won't win any awards but they're perfectly gameable figures. Seen tons of historical figures painted to this standard over the years! I would have been tempted to paint some of the gun silver onto the visors maybe. Keep 'em coming :)

Okay, there seem to be some parts visibly left bare/primer.  I'm a bad painter (hence you don't see my stuff posted here... or anywhere except maybe Evilbay) but I think you can do much better than this effort.

Please try again using suggestions above.

Gracias,

Glenn

I agree, the figs can still be touched up at a later point. In my experience, most varnish is an OK base for painting, as long as you don't add a whole new coat of paint. Some wash, a bit drybrushing, a few details should be easy to add.

understanding is a three-edged sword

I'll definitely be going back to improve them, so thanks for all the comments.  Working to a deadline almost seems like a must for me, otherwise I have no motivation to paint.  This is something I'm going to have to change as whenever I rush through things I feel really happy with them, until I look at the pictures later on and see all the little imperfections.

I think if you picked out the visors in a color, probably black would be easiest, then that would really help.

While I concur the little guys could be improved upon.

Lets look at the upside, the chap has a army painted ready to rock. So far this year I have painted a fair few figs but due to shotgun project syndrome have not got a single gamable unit finished this year.

I say put em on the table top and let em go for it. You can always improve the paint jobs between battles and infact actually gaming with them will make you want to invest more into them.

Point taken.

An army on the table can always be modified/improved later.

Gracias,

Glenn

I think if you picked out the visors in a color, probably black would be easiest, then that would really help.

The visors were picked out in Hawk Turquoise (I mostly use GW colours), with the upper body being in Enchanted Blue.  However I had to use the flash on my camera so they ended up being rendered the same colour.  Blackstone suggested using a silver colour and I've got some of the new Ironbreaker colour, so I'll try that.
