What can you do with these?
« on: 12 November 2012, 11:23:33 PM »
Hi Folks

Here’s a quick question – what can you do with those foam inserts that come in miniature blisters?
These ones...

Drop by my blog to see what I did (and I am sure that this is NOT original) - www.shedwars.blogspot.com

Would love to hear other ideas

Cheers
Eric

I use them as spacers between unfinished VSF vehicles during transport :)
So many projects..... so little time.......

I think you could afford to share a little more of this on the forum Eric! ;)

Anyway, using the foam for making trees is a great idea, although I would have torn the pieces off the foam with my fingers rather than used scissors as I think the foliage does look a bit blocky.

I suppose you can also use it for hedges in a similar manner?

Finally (and I think it may have been AndyM on these forums whom I first saw use this technique) you can shape it in various ways and then soak it in watery plaster; when it sets, you'll have a rigid structure which can then be painted and further textured if required. Good for coral structures and rocky outcrops I think!

I did some thing similar with them. I cut them down in strips rounded the tops off a little and made hedge rows for 15mm ECW and micro armor.

You can apply some brown paint and carefully touch an even surface with it to receive some quick and nice looking chipping effects...

Nice work Giles. You would not know to look at the finished article how they started out. :)

What can you use miniature packing foam for?

1 Painting - break up the foam and use it in a dabbing action across armour to imitate chips and scratches.

2 Moss - Saw this recently, superglue down some foam onto already painted rocks or bases. when dry pull off and what remains attached can be painted green to imitate moss.

3 Model Trees or Bushes - already mentioned.

4 Packaging for single figures or when transporting minis.

5 Masking - press into cockpits or openings when spray painting to protect the interior.

Just some. Anyone got anything to add?

Just a heads up for those of us that are using this for scenics and other modeling projects. Store you stuff in a dry place. The foam deterioates very badly if it gets or stays damp.

Yeah very realistic 'foam monsters of death'. So now for the typical questions of LAF - where are they from and what rules you planing to use them with? :D

Now a serious note, I just tend to use them for packing. Or if you put them in the bottom of a contain, wet them and then put some greaseproof paper over the top you can make a half decent wet palet.
