Battering Ram in Hammersmith?
« on: November 24, 2012, 05:41:51 PM »
As my good friend Steam Flunky pointed out recently in another thread, both our love for miniatures was among other things highly inspired by a large diorama we had admired in the very first GW shop down in Hammersmith in the early eighties (1980/81); 1 Dalling Road, of course, not the later one.

The diorama showed a large battering ram drawn by some beasts and lots of orcs and trolls all around. At that times it was really impressive.

What I like to know:

Who else can remember this?

Who created the diorama? Is it still in existence?

Are there any photos of it around?

Any information much appreciated.
 :)

I was going to point to your post on frothers (http://frothersunite.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=42028), but I see you posted it here too. :)

People just don't seem to do stuff like that anymore. :(

I don't know, this forum gets very high quality projects that are either very big or very mad, but this combintion of large scale madness seems a thing of the past.

Never made it to Hammersmith but I was at the opening of the very first shop in Birmingham (GW's 2nd ever shop). I still sigh a little whenever I go past the site and wish thast the old style GW was still there.

As to Pig Faced Orcs you can get the new versions from Otherworld Miniatures. The old MiniFigs ones are still produced c/o Dave Ryan at Caliver Books:

If you check my earlier post above you'll see a link to the pig-faced orcs.

I remember going to 1 Dalling road around 1980-1982 when I first discovered Dungeons and Dragons. I don't recall the diorama, but I remember the excitement at seeing all that was on offer there. ;D

Yes, I remember that diorama, on the bottom shelf of a glass cabinet on the right hand side as you faced the till?

I seem to think that it was mainly Minifigs VFW figures. I certainly remember a line of walking heads as well which I coveted, Ahh happy days.
