Free-form Gang Clash
« on: 01 December 2012, 03:28:52 AM »
So I (like I assume many of you) have a vast collection of very cool minis and bits that have as of yet not been built or painted for whatever reason. That in mind I was talking with a few friends about creating a free form futuristic gang combat. I'd say something in the tune of necromunda but with rules that are quite literally made up on the fly. The whole point of it would be more for the story so you'd have to have players that can temper their desires to win with an imaginative mind for story. Basically the only structure I've got so far is that small models(short and on a 10mm base) are 1pt, man sized models(10mm as well) are 2pts, a 20mm based model is 4points and a 40mm base is 8pts. Beyond that each model would be able to use anything he is modeled with. Does he have a rope? He could tie someone up. Is he carrying tools? He can try to fix a machine. Stuff that basically visually makes sense. We would determine the extent of abilities based on how visually the models are or how the owner of the gang describes them. At first I think there'll be a third party who determines how rational the powers/abilites we assign to each model is but I'd assume that as time went on you could come to a general understanding among friends as to who has what. As for rolling dice I think a simple roll of a six sided dice for all skill based actions. 3+ for very skilled, 4+ for mediocre and 5+ for poor. If it warrants it make a 2+ or 6+ skill. If a 6 or 1 are rolled, reroll for disastrous or legendarily spectacular results. I'll be using this as a log to post gangs that I am working on. My first will be my "Grey Grots" a squad of mostly grots led by an ork slave trader. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

This sounds like it would potentially be great fun. Id like to hear more.
Good luck

The sickle in the fruitful field;
The sword he sung a song of death,
But could not make the sickle yield."

Calvinball in miniatures form?  ;D

I joined my gun with pirate swords, and sailed the seas of cyberspace.

I would by lying if I said that this concept had not crossed my mind more than once.  ;)

I'd recommend starting by looking at generic systems like GoalSystem, 7TV and Tri-Stat. Maybe an odd mish-mash may be the way to go.

I can finally see a use for the Complete Adventurer that Citadel released as a limited edition a couple of decades ago!

If you run a fantasy version, that is... ;)

Goalsystem would be a good place to start, don't know so much about the other two. Rogue Trader would also work with a good deal of flexibility.

I have to say it was a blast. I ran a group of greenskin(or in my case greyskin) slavers. Just a ton of grots and a couple of orks. It was loads of fun. He overextended with his Iron Father and my netters jumped up and started dragging him off the board which we decided would be the end game. He stopped me 1" from the edge! XD It was frantic and fun. Highlights were my squig hound knocking down and ravaging a space marine and when my single fire rocket team on the top of a tower rolled a misfired and blew up killing both the rocketer and spotter hahaha. Here's the link to my overview: http://stabhard.blogspot.com/2012/12/free-form-miniatures-game-test-1.html
Hopefully I'll post more games soon.
