I know what I'm building *A start of sorts p2*
« on: 04 December 2012, 12:13:23 AM »
And once again it will be rather on the large side.

Japanese theme (surprise) for me and it will consist of a mountain side with a stream falling down the side to a watermill from whence it will turn into a stream/river at the bottom...

Time will tell whether this will end up in the cupboard like that bloody wizards tower  lol

cheers

James

James

Will the water flow and the wheel move ? I have a small pond pump if you are interested.

Thanks Giles but I've had experience with flowing water at work and it's not something I want to explore any time soon (there are one or two people here that know what I'm on about  :) ).

Just static but hopefully painted nice  :)

cheers

Surely we should be forcing you to finish the wizards tower!! What about adding a drainage system to with it broken at points and running water coming out at places?!? ;)

So not water rushing into a nuclear power station then? I was thinking of large atmospheric terrain effect that would leave Hammers' geyser in the shade.  :D

I did think about a rain cloud using a clear, ripply material for the 'edge' edge of the rain pour and a cotton wool cloud with a wire framework underneath.

It could be used for weather effects on a game but I probably wouldn't use it.

Can anyone else see what's hilariously wrong with this particular mill?  lol

Actually chaps, I'm afraid to say that this type of mill is quite common in Japan. The wheel doesn't contact the stream at the bottom and only uses the small channel for power. See the video below for a modern rebuild.

http://footage.shutterstock.com/clip-1360633-stock-footage-small-japanese-water-mill-running-in-the-expo-commemorative-park-osaka.html

Of course there are various versions that were implemented depending on usage and location (and period).

I haven't decided on the exact layout for mine yet as there is one near my in-laws just on the outskirts of Hirakata (an outer suberb of Osaka) which is slightly different from the image above but being a daft sod I haven't taken any pictures of it yet  ::)

cheers

Fascinating.  Seems like the flow of water and distance of shoot from wheel are finely tuned for maximum down pressure.

Rather good James...  :)
Look forward to seeing it.

A medieval water mill would be nice too... To sit on one of Steve's river boards...  ::)
