BigB Renovates his Game Cave
« on: December 11, 2012, 01:51:39 AM »
It was time to upgrade the cave while the weather was good, the funds available, and the wive's eyes looking elsewhere...

BEFORE

My game room is basically a 10'x17' outbuilding behind my house that was used as a shed for 10 years or so.  It's well constructed (cinderblock, stucco finish, fancy hip roofing, etc., but still a shed.

We'll, last year, I added a window A/C unit and turned it to a game room with much success; however, it was lacking a refined touch:

SO...This is what I did to it:

Stripped it out:

I upgraded the lighting, filled the concrete, primered, and painted it.  Added carpet and 163 linear feet of shelves:

Yeah, I had to make sure there's a fridge in there!

Put the 54"x90" game table back in the room (more detail on the table below):

And then start loading the shelves:

View when you walk in -

View to the left right after entering the room -

View to the right (see all those islands?!?) -

Back Left -

Back Center -

Back Right -

Left Side of table pedestal -

Right side of table pedestal -

Under the game table where I store game mats rolled up and bins of hills and such to put on top of the table as needed:

All that's left is to bring out a few more armies and do some nifty re-boxing of items (smaller trees, walls, etc.) to make better use of vertical space on the shelving.

Yeah, I've got a lot of stuff, but understand that I started collecting back in 1980, before many of you Wee Babes were a glimmer in your father's eye...

And regarding my quick reference posters, they are not gone.  They are being laminated so that I can add grommets in the corners and then hook them on the shelves for whichever game we are playing at the time.

Feels awesome!  And there's a large since of pride in the work I put into it which makes it even better.

When the dog and I get "banished" out there by she who rules the roost, we'll have to fake the sad faces...

Wow.  :o Wargamers heaven.  ;D
You might want to correct the dimensions of your photos on LAF, everything looks very slim. Only by clicking them did I get to see what everything supposed to look like.

Fixed. Not sure what happened as I didn't set the dimensions on the original post. Oh well. It works now.

Thanks for the assist!

I'm completly green with envy.

Good for you!
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

These two pics will give a better idea of the scale and what I was thinking when I planned this.  One is my top down plan and the other is the closet maid official drawing (courtesy my buddy who works there):

I didn't know we were allowed that much stuff.

Very nice space there. Great to see the fridge. Keep it stocked though, can't have you getting dehydrated. :)

It's all in how you present it.  When it's spread out, it doesn't look like so much.  Now that I'm consolidating space, the cat is out of the bag so to speak.  At least it's the out building and she has no real desire to go out there...

Stocked with:
 - Negro Modello
 - New Castle
 - Coors Light Piss Water for one of the group
 - Sodas
 - Water

Just about covers my bases...
