Accessing the site though an anonymous VPN

I usually use a VPN connection when accessing the great, wide web, but seem unable to connect to LAF when doing so. Is that a deliberate choice, a coincidence or maybe something at my end?

Something at your end, for sure. Maybe a firewall setting or anything else. It works to me using VPN at work.
