LOTOW Replacment
« on: 09 January 2013, 04:10:26 PM »
Since LOTOW was gone the way of the Dodo can anyone recomend a replacment.  I am looking at doing the Apache wars in 28mm with some gamers new to the period and am looking for rules which suit this conflict and are available for my friends to potentially get hold of copies.  Any recomendations?

In the mood from LOTOW for all things Old West I bought Gutshot from Hawgleg, looks like a lot of fun...

Gutshot is a lot of fun. Other rules you might look at are Warpaint from West Wind/Old Glory, Desperado, Cowboy Wars.

just because the game is no longer in print doesn't mean you can't keep playing it. the rules are still good and as long as you can get a copy they're never going to disappear. and if you can't find a copy of the rules on ebay, they're exactly the same as the much more easy to get hold of Lord of the Rings/Hobbit SBG, so all you would need then are the posse rules and campaign, which are easy enough. i've even created some resources which you can download from Scribd.

If however, what you are looking for is new content, then you will have to actually go for a new game. sorry.

Another vote to try Gutshot, very Hollywood Western in tone.

Gracias,

Glenn

I've always been a big fan of Flagship Games: Gunfight! You can still get them from Scale Creep

To be fair, they never brought out much new material anyway. the rules are perfectly good as they are. Just pick up a copy on ebay and you're good to go.

It's also very easy to simply make your own rules - take what you like, remove stuff you don't etc.  I'll have a free PDF rules set eventually, but it'll be a few months.

You might not need all that many copies of the rules... You can get the basic rulebook and Frontier off Ebay and playsheets are enough to run the game with once someone knows the game flow.

That's what I did -- I've got the full set of books and compiled a couple of quick ref guides for everyone else and it's all working well.

(If you're interested, PDFs at http://www.fysh.org/~katie/wargames/downloads/ )

When it comes to posse lists, 1) the US Cav / Natives ones are short and there's only two of them. 2) I'm sure the authors wouldn't mind you photocopying the odd page out of the books for personal use. And... 3) there are summary sheets available on the internet as well.

I still have my copies of LOTOW and play it still. A friend and I have dabbled in a few Blackwater Gultch games also, he also does Gutshot that he really enjoys...I will be trying it soon.

True if you need any of the books ask me, I usually have been able to find them (and have for a few people).

So the Gutshot rules don't require a GM? But do the rules also cover that option?

Any rules set can easily add a GM.

-Find the stolen merchandise...only the GM knows where (well...him and the Shadow obviously)
-Have the GM deploy your models for you.
-Traitor in your midst?  Only the GM knows.
-etc etc etc.

I am absolutely sold on the "outside" influence idea in wargaming.  Be it a GM or some form of random factor thrown in (tables, dice rolls, cards etc.).  Makes any game 10x more interesting/fun.
