Amazon Miniatures Jewish gunmen for VBCW?
« on: 05 February 2013, 11:46:16 AM »
As per the title, really. Listed in JP's excellent VBCW miniatures guide - http://vbcwminisguide.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/welcome-to-vbcw-miniatures-guide.html - any links I find to them are either - like TMP - claiming that Amazon Miniatures seem to have disappeared, or go to Amazon.com where they try to sell me miniatures.

The reason I want to know is, as I'm doing some North East VBCW minis, I'm interested in the Hasidic Jewish gangsters that Amazon used to produce (Gateshead has and had then a significant Hasidic communiity, and from the maps I've seen in the VBCW it's controlled by the Fascists, so I'd expect some resistance).

So, anyone know anything about the company, who has the moulds, etc?

The last I heard, they had shut down and Paul was very difficult to get hold of as he is abroad.

Rob at Garrison might know more as he was trying to buy some kit and some moulds off them...

Heard the same. Rob was meant to have had the Minot Pendragon molds but it looks like it all fell through.

I might have one or two or did will take a look. What I do know however was they ahd AK47 and PKMG o maybe a bit late for VBCW.

Worth looking at is South Shields Arabic community certainly worth going for and you could use the Artizan arab types perhaps etc.

Thanks for the recommendation, DoctorPete; though to be honest, I don't think I've ever seen any of the Jewish community in Gateshead wearing a fur hat. Generally it's like a homburg with a wide, flat brim. But if I can ever get any of the Amazon minis, I'll be looking for a few more guys I'm sure for the militia, and these are now top of my list!

I'll try to contact Garrison - thanks guys.

Lowtardog - it's good idea, but Shields is the wrong direction for me - Gateshead up to the wild and wooly pit-yacker lands of North-West Durham is my patch. As to the weapons, the only picture I've seen is the one on the guide, and all I know is that there are 'two packs' - I'm hoping that means that there are 8 figs, so even if a couple of them have later guns, I can start the unit... but I hadn't actually realised what they were armed with. D'oh!

Matakishi has some of the Armed Jew figures up in his Weir War II section:

Might give you a better idea what you're looking for?

oy weh..... ;)
it must be these You are looking for

Chassidim of older fashion would wear the Shtreimel if they were Haredim, although it is doubtful that these rabbinic scholars would participate in worldly enterprises  ;)
But I love the idea anyway
good luck with it

Thanks for the great replies chaps! I'd never seen Matakishi's Qabalist Commandos before, yes that's something like what I want to do, but without the Ark or the Angels. Nice golem, by the way.

However, I have found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gateshead_talmudical.jpg

As it shows the Gateshead Talmudical College in the early 1930s, and few of the staff and students have beards, and there are none of the fedora-style hats that were so characteristic of the Jewish community there when I was a kid, perhaps I can get away with some Gangster/Pulp figures instead for the majority of the Jewish Resistance!

Or perhaps add hats to bearded miniatures? It's a shame because those ones matakishi has are very nice indeed.

Yes indeed they are. My current plan is to try to find some of the original Amazon Jewish gunmen figures, and mix them with some gangster figures, and perhaps GS some beards onto a few of the gangster figures, and possibly remodel some hats. But, certainly, the styles in the 1930s photograph give me a bit more confidence about being able to find some suitable minis with a range of '20s/'30s weapons.

As the original query has been answered, I'm going to request that this thread is moved into Interwar and I'll change the title accordingly.

Also, IIRC, the Sergio Leone movie Once Upon a Time in America features prohibition era Jewish gangsters, who all dressed pretty much according to the fashion of the time - no big black hats, ringlets or bushy beards to be seen.

So yeah, generic 30s gangster models would work, if you thought they had a certain Hebraic quality...

True enough but there's a charm to orthodox jews with guns.  :)

Sgt Major Miniatures make a pack of armed Jews, in their Get Some Pulp line. They don't look great on the photo, but I suspect the paintjob is not doing them justice.
