Strange Aeons iDevice App - is there a demand?
« on: 05 February 2013, 04:42:52 PM »
Guys, especially principals at UMW, I have a question for y'all:

A buddy of mine who is an iProgrammer is considering making a "list manager" type software package that will, in essence, allow you to lose the pencil and paper and allow you to manage your characters in-game using an iPad or iPhone. I'm actually the one talking him into it. I might even pay, in part, for the development.

Anyhow, it wouldn't be "branded" or anything, it would simply be "compatible" so to speak. He'd prefer if he had UMW's blessing (which I'm begging for at this very moment, in this post) and to wit, be able to use some of the terminology in the game for the sheets.

I came up with the idea and approached him with it, and the concept I had was that he'd make "cards" that have characters' info on them, with a swipe changing cards. I also thought it would be nifty to allow you to take a pic of the model with the on-board character so you could have your wee chaps and lasses right there on the screen associated with the model profile.

Anyhow, I'm not even sure he wants to do it, but I am here to gauge demand, mostly.

If this existed, would you pay a dollar/quid or two for it?

I demand it!!!! ;)

And would most definitely pay a small amount for it. Not so sure you'd get your money back from making one but I like the idea of having a pic of your own minis next to the stats ( lurkers and threshold).

I'm thinking that it's not that hard an app, since it's mostly just adding text to blank spaces and whatnot. It's also not so much "for profit" as much as "for fans".

If I spend 100$ on it, that's about what I'd hope to get back. If I didn't, well, it's 100$. B.F.D.

Not for me, to be honest.
Not too keen on everything technological, prefer the pen and paper touch, but in this day and age I am sure it would be popular.

It's clear why you have that stance: You don't lose much!

I've gone through 5 or 6 lists at least, not to mention the lurkers. I'm not a tree hugger, for sure, but I am a continental business manager for a big recycling company. I figure every piece of paper that gets saved is one less burden on the Mahogany and Pine in the world.

I kind of have this thing for air. Call me weird. ;)

An iPhone display is simply too small to be very useful, and I don't have an iPad...so not very interested. Sorry.

Nothing against your stance, superfly, I am just a bit of a technophobe, to be honest.
I do not even own a smart phone of any description, just not my thing.
I can see that a lot of people would be interested, though, mate.
I think those in favor would be in the majority.

As for using reams of paper, that is not the case.
I tend to be careful and use an eraser.

I think the display is perfect for the limited amount of information needed to play, but that's just me. I've given up using the "IRS Long Form List" and have moved over to using those ace cards that (sorry forget who) made and posted here. Those little cards completely changed the game for me. Much easier to use, much more like Heroscape with a story rather than a light RPG.

You may be right though. I'm just tired of having to rubbish my lists because my wife is such a lucky bugger. She rolls 6s on attacks as if she was born to do it.  The only downside is that she is very anti-gambling or I'd have her at a craps table in a heartbeat.

I think it'd be pretty cool... I've often thought about learning how to write android apps so I could make rosters for different games.

I agree. An iPhone screen is a good size to have all the stats and rules for a lurker on ( + apoc of your mini). Having a page that contains them all so you could highlight a few ( that you were using in the game and were able to quick swipe between would be handy too).

It would also be nice if you were able to add weapons/skills to them temporarily for each game and it gave you a BP total for your team ( lurkers especially)

I would not be interested in spending money on this, even if it seems a nice idea. Hope you get enough people too help you thou.

I love the "oldschool" pen&paper approach, people sitting scrolling on there smart phones for information for the game is rather annoying and unpersonal IMHO, having your list on paper actually use less time, and somehow ain't as annoying and unsocial for your mates.

If it worked on an android tablet I would be interested.

I find my tablet very handy as a gaming assistant - it is just a pity there aren't more apps available.

To be honest I am a complete technophobe...my interest is based purely on if the players want/need it...I will lurk... :-I

Interesting idea, however, personally I prefer pen and paper. It just has a better feeling IMHO.

Also using your phone/tablet while gaming just increases the odds that you'll be checking mail/texts since you have your device in your hand already, which could easily shift your focus from what you're doing. (which in my grumpy old man eyes would be rather inconsiderate to your fellow player ;) )

I like the idea of an app, sign me up. Definitely willing to pay a few dollars.
