War grave puzzle
« on: February 19, 2013, 01:28:06 PM »
Hi - an appeal to the collective knowledge base that is the LAF...

I am researching my great uncle's WW1 records -

John Lee Price, born 1889 in Herefordshire.

I have found a record on Ancestry.com, showing that he served in the 8th service battalion, Gloucestershire regiment and died on 1st sept 1918 in France.

His service number was 12934.

However, when I look him up on the commonwealth war graves commission website, it has his grave Karasouli military cemetery in Greece.
The date is the same, but it has his battalion as the 2nd Glos. http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/623739/PRICE,%20J%20L

This is his medal roll document.

Can any Great War experts explain this discrepancy please?

These are not always accurate, I did research on a chap once, who two graves, a few days apart from two different units, as he had recently transferred.  All I can say is that Graves Registration were so busy in the WWs that errors were made, especially in the days before computers.....

You'll probably find more specific expertise by taking your question here:

Tch - I guess the only answer is to book a trip to Greece and go and find out!  ;)
