Proposed Offensive Miniatures US Paras Box Art
« on: 20 March 2013, 01:23:37 PM »
We commissioned a painting for box art. If it is popular we will be selling the framed original at Salute, signed by the artist and Dave Jackson the boss. We will also be offering a limited run of quality reprints, signed and numbered by the artist. The original will be £375 and the signed unframed prints will be  £32.50.

Is it intended to be an homage to the Airfix box art?

None of the figures look authentic combat poses.  I have no idea what the rear figure is supposed to be doing and neither of the other two are aiming their weapons.  Does not work at all for me.  My first thought was that they were based on the Airfix figures.

Are you folks repackaging your existing range or is this for something new?

I really do like the existing range ,but did I read somewhere they were to big to mix with artizan ? the art does seem to be a poor copy of the Airfix art though .

I like the way it depicts a bonfire in a greenhouse.  I'd rate it as being amongst my favourite depictions of burning greenhouses.

Only amoungst? Not your all time fav greenhouse bonfires?

Well I think its back to the paint box for our artist.

He did look at Airfix box art, maybe a little too closely!

Feed back has been useful - thanks guys and girls.

It's not just that it looks like a poor copy of the Airfix box art, when surely it would have been better to have tried something original, it's the fact that the helmets are all hopelessly the wrong shapes - in three different ways!

I think pictures of the figures them selves would be better.

Agreed. Even more so when you have so many painted by Andrew Taylor. A picture of the figures on a table setting would do it for me.

The proposed box art is, one could say after seeing the Airfix box art, beyond plagiarism already  :? Maybe use different artist with some knowledge or at least interest regarding the era/gear etc or use, as proposed, figures themselves?

Yes using an actual artist is a good recommendation. The UK is chock full of them but you do want to look at their portfolios before committing. Whilst commissioning Damien Hirst or Tracey Emin to do the box art would allow you to sell the boxes for about twenty times the cost of the minis, the results might be at odds with a strictly accurate rendition of US paratroopers and there maybe some practical constraints around postage with either.

To maximize profit and ease mass production I'd suggest you get in touch with a chap who goes by the name of Banksy. He should be able to knock you out a stencil kit and you can whack the design on any old cardboardboxes you have lying around the house. I think you'd a have to admit that this is already a great deal more accurate a depiction and has more artistic merit that the original offering. Stick with the burning greenhouse theme though, I rather like that.

.....and painted by me too (nebelwerfer, jeeps, kubelwagens etc|)! but yes he is very very good.

The thing about box are is that you can depict the subject in action with context and explosions smoke, sense of speed and movement etc. It is aspirational and emotive in a way almost impossible to suggest with even the nicest photographed on the best boards

Thats why many many companies use it, including Airfix. I appreciate the feed back, that why we posted this as we were very unsure about the artwork.

I think we will still try and commission something else. I am going to try using a photo of actually figures converted to an outline for the artist to work to.

Bruce
