Romulans what the....
« on: 27 March 2013, 12:36:45 PM »
Ok a bit of a rant. I'll say it I love Star Trek. Romulans have always been A#1+ 10. Aggressive Vulcans! What is not to love. OK maybe if they were green in color but anyway. What is up with the forehead on the 'newer' versions? Anyway does anyone make Earth-Romulan war star ships? Need then and do not want to make them from scratch, thanks much.

They stole the Augment super soldier serum and injected themselves so they now look like original series Klingons....

Or the costume department for the Next Gen had left over head ridges for Klingons and thought "hmm cant let this go to waste"

I love old-style Romulans too.  They were always my favorite race.

What scale are you looking for in ships?
This is my boomstick!

The original art director that came up with the explanation said 'During his work on the movie, he first created a back-story to justify the change their faces had undergone, explaining that as a result of their grief, anger, and general bad-ass persona, the Romulans chose to cut and scar themselves, leaving behind such significant keloids on their foreheads that it eventually wended its way into the gene pool over many years, eventually becoming a natural characteristic of all Romulans and thus creating the distinct difference between them and their Vulcan cousins.'

Obviously, we have different understandings of how genetics works.

I just assumed ritual scarring every generation. Goes with the facial tats and the general 'punk' attitude of the survivors...

Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

*breathes*

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

God dammit.

Yeah I think I understand genetics the way you do, not the way this guy does  :(

I don't see why Romulans need to be all gnarly, I thought they were supposed to complement the Klingons as the "sophisticated, attractive but still violent" species.

If I've got it right, Roddenbery saw his Klingons the same way Lukas wanted the Wookies, 'noble savages' warriors. Lukas had to add the Ewoks when the Wookies were made too tech-savvy.

The Romulans were civilized, all right. Dirty, underhanded, conniving...  lol

PS Oh, wait, how FOOLISH of us! How parochial! To assume Romulan genetics should follow Earth genetics...  :D

My understanding was Lucas added the Ewoks when he couldnt get enough 6ft+ actors and stuntmen to play Wookies for the Endor scenes. So went the other way abd got short people instead.

I was also lead to the impression (cant remember where from) that Romulans were originally a cross breed of Klingon and Vulkan. Maybe Star Trek is like all the long running Sci-Fi shows (Dr Who, Star Wars Ect Ect) that have so much history there continuity becomes... "Fluid" :P

I always assumed Romulans were meant to be cunning Space Chinese and Klingons angry unsubtle Soviets.
Admittedly Ive got nothing at all to base that on...

As to size in star ships ,any. Genetics wow. Now what about those sci fi kimono-zoot suits they wear? Sorry do not like that! I've seen from the show and to movies the Romulans have the 'scarring' and sometimes not, strange that. Would love to see a spin off show about and based on the Romulans. Say a federation trader/ spy/ diplomat stuck on a far wandering, lost possibly Romulan ship? Oh and again NO Kimono-Zoot suits...

I thought the Romulans totally changed from the TNG appearance in the last two movies?

The Romulan Star Empire was modeled after the Romans.  Two Homeworlds, Romulus & Remus.  Military ranks like Centurion etc.  They were originally Vulcans who left their homeworld because they disagreed with the philosophy of logic over emotion.  The bumpy-head syndrome was just another manifestation of TNG.  Every alien had bumpy heads in that series.

I alway thought Klingons were supposed to be the cold war Russians, and Romulans were supposed to be aliens that looked like Spock. After all, in the original series bad guys aliens weren't pre-planned out. They would show up once and might never be seen again. The Klingons and Romulans just got lucky.

I just rationalize the Romulans from the reboot as being Space Hicks. I thought at the end there actually was a proper Romulan standing in the background chatting with other important people.

I'll see your genetically-scarred romulans and raise you Splice, where the featured creature develops a venomous tail stinger from it's human DNA.  It's because we're predatory.  ;D

What was the Enterprise explanation for TOS' smooth-foreheaded klingons, again?  I never watched the show.

Some silly thing about a virus and the cure coming from human Augments. I just always imagine that they always had the bumps, and that their clothes were a bit less fragile... A while back, while watching the first season of TOS, I drew this: http://fav.me/d5n3ukz
