Is my english so poor?
« on: 24 April 2013, 10:00:43 AM »
Acoording Forum rules (2.4 Politics and religion):

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES are you allowed to start discussions about current political events, potentially contentious religious issues

According to my very poor english I AM ""ALWAYS"" ALLOWED  to start discussions about current political events if IS NOT potentially contentious religious issues ...
and A LOT (99,99% of them) ARE NOT potentially contentious religious issues!

... according to moderators of this forum every discussion about current  political events is censured because they think (committing a serious impedonabile mistake) is not allowed (committing a serious impedonabile mistake) by forum rules.

IMHO it would be better to change rules and say the truth: speaking about political events is not allowed in this forum!

The same about "current affairs which may involve aggressive patriotic sentiment" ... say the truth: "We do not want people to talk about current affair" ... STOP.

I hope You do not consider this topic againnst your way to read rules. Change them and tell the truth!

If you want to see it this way you may be right. We don t want them here.

I think that political discussions mostly cause trouble. We should just respect these rules.

....which means you are NOT to start any of these topics under any circumstances.

Maybe there should be an 'or' inserted in place of the '.' which would make it clearer.

So, if it read:

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES are you allowed to start discussions about current political events OR potentially contentious religious issues.

Maybe then it would be clear and not cause the confusion that you are experiencing.

This ^^^ sums up the matter perfectly.
In my opinion.

To discuss/talk about politics or religion I visit other forums, is not a matter if it's allowed or not, it's a matter of context, I dont go to religion forums to talk about miniatures or wargaming. But thats only my personal opinion.
In the other hand, many times I wonder if wouldn't be clever to rename "Open Talk" for something less close to the "speaker's corner" idea, just my two cents.

Honestly I think that the taboo that speaking openly about things such as politics and religion is a very negative one, mind you it does seem to rile people up quickly doesn't it?

I agree that it's good to talk about politics. But this is a forum about Toy Soldiers and I feel politics has no place here.

So, if it read:

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES are you allowed to start discussions about current political events OR potentially contentious religious issues.

Note that the above is part of a listing of "prohibited" topics. The full sentence is:

Quote
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES are you allowed to start discussions about current political events, potentially contentious religious issues, or current affairs which may involve aggressive patriotic sentiment.

I agree that this may be a misunderstanding, although I went to great pains to translate the rules as unambiguously as possible (I agree that it could be phrased differently, e.g. "YOU MAY NOT start discussions (...).").

This is not to stifle discurse but for a variety of reasons, for example:

  • to avoid potential legal issues
  • to avoid having to arbitrate discussions on a case-by-case basis
  • to avoid setting an arbitrary set of "acceptable" topics
  • to minimise offensive behaviour towards other forum members, who could be offended or insulted, as such discussions quickly get out of hand

The LAF is supposed to be apolitical, which includes religion.

You are welcome to participate in such discussions, but do it elsewhere. We appreciate that those topics are very important to some people, for example religious beliefs (I personally am very interested in geo- and domestic policy, as well as modern history), but we do not want other, less scrupulous people to abuse this just to create disharmony. Therefore, no discussion of these topics in the first place.

Paul, Bergil and Guy are on the money in my opinion. There's enough contention in the painting competition than worrying about current affairs as well.

There is a certain irony that we can then get on with talking about World War 2, the Spanish Civil War, the Russian revolution, the American Civil war, the Crusades etc etc without being concerned about the politico-religious philosophical issues behind them. Just an observation.

I don´t think there is any irony, because we don´t judge wrong or right, but play it or talk about historical facts or speculations.

Spot on. It's as simple as Paul says.

The rules are clear enough in English. It may be that there's a translation problem here for Pierrebi.

If you want to debate world events, politics, religion, societal, moral and philosophical issues of the moment, do it on Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, or any of 1001 other online outlets for these sorts of discussions.
Firstly, it's not appropriate here because this is a forum specifically about miniatures.
Secondly, discussions on these contentious real-life topics almost always end up in some kind of argument and bad feeling which is damaging to the karma, courtesy, and general good nature of this particular forum. So let's not drag that sort of thing into a forum which is about our enjoyable hobby. Leave it where it belongs.

It's jolly amusing reading the comments on youtube videos sometimes though - amazes me how things can degenerate into such a load of cobblers so often (and usually so unrelated to the original video...)  :D

Quite. I think LAF has such an agreeable atmosphere because there's nothing from outside of the hobby to distract from it.

Also this forum is run for us totally free of charge, it's for them to define whatever rules they choose and not for me. I'm quite happy with that.

Now about this new pope...
