I quite like the Rowney FW artist's acrylic inks for some purposes. They tend to dry slightly glossy, which is great for leather, skin and similar applications. The Thuggee cultists I did for a previous round of the current LPL had their skin done with Burnt Umber ink over a basecoat of brown paint with a quick, rough highlight of lighter tan. It makes for good Indian, Middle Eastern or African skin tones - the African tones require a couple of coats of ink, the others usually just one.

The old long out of production GW inks included the best red ink I've ever owned. Pity my bottle dried up a year or so ago!

Reaper do nice inks as part of their Master Series line, too. They dry nice and matte.

I agree that the Rowney FW inks are some of the very best.

I have about six bottles whick I should use more - for a general suggestion try a (proper) art store somewhere that lets you try the product in the Midlands there are two that I regularly support;

PSW - based in Alcester Worcestershire (actually maybe Warwickshire).

And Spectrum Fine Arts, Birmingham.

Rowney FW and Liquitex Ink! range are both good. They work equally well brushed, airbrushed or in a Rotring pen. I've been using Winsor and Newton drawing inks on and off for about 30 years, and these acrylic formulations knock the old shellac ones into a cocked hat.

The only downside to the Liquitex ones is that the bottles won't stand upright in my Really Useful Drawer unit, which the Rowney ones will!
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

A mix of Rowney sepia and Payne's grey gives a lovely "natural" black that seems to work beautifully on metalwork.

Im currently using my Windsor and newton inks ,but only because im out of army painter ink.
they work well ,but they do leave a gloss. problem with them is that they are pretty pricy ,and so i should really save them for my actual artwork.
never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

Really like Liquitex ink, I find it dries very matt (still got a lot of citadel inks too, very good for mixing your own metallics)

Does anyone make an ink that's exactly like the GW ones that come in bottles with black screw cap lids?!

They were right perfect.

Almost my dear Dr. Der Nordlanderberserker.
Armypainter have released a set of washes/inks that can be found here and there. I haven't tried them myself, but I got the impression that they're like the old GW ones :)

Coat D'Ams sell the really old Citadel inks.

Privateer Press do a range of inks very similar to the old GW type.

Rowney FW and Liquitex are both superb, I go Liquitex simply because they are more matt.
Commission Painting undertaken, PM or email me.
