That Fantasy Game on a Budget
« on: June 05, 2013, 09:41:41 AM »
As the title suggest I decided to try my hand at modelling a fantasy army for our club touney however I attempted to do it as cheaply as possible (come peeps think outside the GW box!)
Here's the end result, more on the blog - http://offtclub.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/warhammer-on-budget-part-2.html

What a splendid idea. Am I allowed to steal the core of it?

Those scorpions look really good. What brand of toy are they?
That is quite a cheap army too.

Nicely done. I really like the unit of giant Flies, that works well for all sorts of fantasy/pulp gaming.

Yeah the flies are my favourite, very useful for all sorts of gaming adventures (Dr Livingstone in darkest africa?).
The toys are from a budget store (poundland here in the Uk) and are some weird floppy plastic so not that durable. I've chucked the packaging but I'll call in and check and put an update up.

And if anyone wants to "borrow" the idea please do.  None of that silly "spot the space marine" rubbish if you know what i mean (if not Google it and see some more GW sillyness).

Thanks guys

That works for me, mate.
I cant see the problem myself, especially if you were willing to label the units for the 'brainwashed'.

That really is a dirt cheap army that is even better value as those bases of gribblies can be used in so many other types of Pulp or Strange Aeons typer games, as well as other sci-fi.
Much more versatile than that other company's figures.

Very clever, I reckon.

(Right, that does it, getting off the bus early next time I go and visit The Lockswin, there is a Poundland not too far from him. Must pay it a visit and see what else they have cheap.  :D)

That is a great idea.
I was once in the middle of building a dryad/Treeman Woodelf army out of twigs and greenstuff, but gave it up, pity I didn't keep them now to show off.

I was a little shocked at the response...

I really did think this hobby was about imagination however it would seem that there’s a group out there that don’t want to use it but would rather have the “official” imagination foisted on us by a corporate entity aimed at maximising profits for shareholders……….rant rant rant.

They're called 'Warhammer players'.

Oh Ste, looks like you've run full tilt into the disturbing and frustrating phenomenon of the brainwashed GWombie. You have my full sympathy.
I've seen a lot of this on a certain other forum; read some of the ludicrous justifications for sticking rigidly to GW products, from paints to rules (my favourite - and not an uncommon one - "I still play Warhammer because I like the fluff"); and put out a few rants as to why they're so ludicrous. At this point my overall view is, to coin a phrase, the only winning move is not to play. Or at least, play something else.
You've seen how using different models only(?) provoked wails of 'change' and 'not GW' and 'unclean'. I'd suggest you go a step further and also try to introduce a different game or two, something from a company that exerts less of a toxic stranglehold. Can't say it'd be easy, especially with that stranglehold, and I can imagine a few (many?) diehards who won't even consider something other than GW; but I think it might be worth it.  To stick with existing model collections, you could try HotT (especially on a budget) or Kings of War. Also God of Battles, depending on specific collections. (I'd say you've got a decent wee T'lekkan proxy force, there. ;) )

Anyways, after the soapboxing: you've got a decent wee force there, full stop. :) You definitely score points for imaginativeness... er... imagination, and I'm particularly impressed with the scorpions. For a while I thought they were the Pardulon minis, cast from a real scorpion!

Can we expect an expansion sometime around the end of October? ;)

A wonderfully creative idea - I have been eyeballing the same bucket of bugs in Poundland with a view to 'what can I do with these?- a great looking army. I haven't seen such a novel army build since I saw someone make a rock giants army out of gravel from his driveway!

He he, I may have seen the same build you refer to sukhe_bator, it was a wonderfully imaginative HoTT army made from garden stones. It kind of inspired me to do this!

The club I play at now has a wide range of games (Malifaux, Bolt Action, WAB, Clash of Empires, Pike & Shotte, WECW, FoW, WFB, 40K, Magic TG, Micronauts, GQ3 and the wonderful IHMN) so we do have a pretty good range of things going on. The funny thing is there is an undercurrent of antipathy from the "Gwombies" to these games which is quite sad as these are genuinely nice people that I'm happy to call my friends. Its quite possibly an unconscious thing as well (I'd like to think so) and is not insurmountable (hopefully).

@Vermiss - we're probably going to drift to KoW for our fantasy fix although I've not heard of God of Battles so may have a nosey, thanks for info.

Should've said: I'm using a lot of assumptions since I don't know your club and the dynamics within it (and I strongly regret jumping too quickly at the gwombie label for your clubmates - apologies!) but given what you said in your blog post, I hope some of them weren't too unreasonable. My problem is that the loyalty and hostility of GW gamers just trips switches in my head!

I think the flies are my favourites, the rest turned out nice too. Lovely little army of creepy crawlies (that could be used for a lot of things) you got there.

If people at your club complain too much, you could always threaten to built a Nurgle army out of offal offcuts next...

@ink the troll - thats about the level of my greenstuff abilities......hmmmm the offal army !

@Vermis - no offence taken mate, its quite a cheery club all things considered. Its housed in a Social Club therefore is 18+ only and has a bar, therefore some of my gaming compatriots were probably under the influence of the barley nectar and as such probably said too much. My sweet revenge is posting in my blog which I'm sure I'll get a ribbing about tonight.

This is bloody excellent! It makes me want to head down to my local toy store and pillage the vinyl buckets of creepy crawlies and get to work on my own projects!
