Battle Group Kursk - Defence of Stalinskoe State Farm
« on: June 05, 2013, 04:18:02 PM »
On bank holiday Monday I played the 3rd instalment of the Battle Group Kursk games series we'd been playing. We used Guy's collection which is 15mm with some variation to suit his figures. We decided we didn't need to make any adjustment to the rules for 15mm, but we did adjust the scenario to fit Guy's collection.

The 25th Tank corps led by Colonel Vorodin attacked towards Stalinskoe a branch of the Oktiabrskii state farm with the 362nd Tank battalion in the lead, supported by the 2446th Self Propelled Artillery regiment. These were further supported by a light tank battalion and the 25th Motorised Rifle battalion.

Stalinskoe was defended by the 1st Panzer Grenadier regiment, helped by the 1st SS Panzerjager battalion.

Historically the Soviets charged straight in to the German guns and were decimated. Since I was playing the Soviets against two inexperienced players I thought I'd follow the same tactics (well that's what I said!).

What do you think of the scenarios in BGK?  Our group looked at them (with a view to playing them with the older Kampfgruppe rules) but they seemed to be very one dimensional (and unfortunately tedious).

Do they play better than they read?

I enjoyed Kampfgruppe Normandy and I find the Battle Group rules better. We've played 3 scenarios so far and enjoyed all of them, mainly because the rules include elements of chance such as the command dice, heroic actions and battle morale events. It has also been challenging to get the most out of the units with the rules which is part of the fun for me.

Thanks, always good when you get hold of a set of rules that you actually enjoy playing.
