Cthellean Cudbears
« on: 11 June 2013, 08:50:28 PM »
On my hunt to get some more Rogue Trader critters and creatures I decided that I wanted som Cudbears. It is something I have been thinking of for some time, but I never really decided what models I wanted to use. There is plenty of bear miniatures out there, but not really any that 100% matched the picture in the Rogue Trader book.

The description of the creature is not much different than an ordinary bear and I believe the idea back then was to use any available bear miniature and paint it purple (or cudbear). The guys who made this up was probably smoking some funny tobaco.

So a few weeks ago, when I was putting in an order at Wargames Foundry I decided to order a pack of "Great Big Bellicose Bear" and painted up I think they make pretty good Cudbears, but judge for yourself.

Space adventurers unavarely enter these cudbears territory.

Lined up with the original GW power armoured trooper.

The bears are the usual high Foundry standard and took paint pretty easy. Now these monsters are ready to ambush any rogue trader or death world adventurer who foolishly enough enters their domain.

"Roooooaaaaaar!!!"

Nice! The various creatures in the RT book are on my 'Some day I'll get to these' list. So many projects... at least I get to live vicariously through you :)

Thanks. I want to do all the creatures in the book, but I doubt I will get around to it all and I am not good at sculpting, so for now I stick to those which are actually available or easy to proxy.

Are they from the original rouge trader books?

Yeah Cudbears are cool, though I don't seem to remember them being purple. Great find though Jonas, and lovely painting.

Edit:
just found this on wikipedia - good call Jonas!!! :D

I also included the discription from the Rogue Trader book, on the blog entry, but left it off this post, but here it is :)

"The Cudbear is a native of the Death World of Cthelle. Aside from its long claws, teeth and shaggy purple hair the Cudbear looks much like a traditional bear. Its thick fur is particular adapt at protecting the creature from the cold and wet environment of the planets temperate forest and mountain regions. A natural predator the Cudbear is extremely dangerous and territorial. It has been known to attack large groups of individuals, even heavily armed individuals, who may wander near its home.

Authorities on Cthelle have reported a few known incidents of the creature climbing aboard out going spacecraft in search of food and massacring the crew."

Ok, I bow my head in shame, I've read that text I don't know how many times, but had never noticed it before.

I'm more jealous of the power armoured figure but well done on the bears!

I was deliberately refusing to comment on that...

I like the rearing up guy in particular.  It looks a lot like the illustration :)

The "bestiary" part of my RT book is ragged from being read through so many times.   In many ways that part of the book captured the feel of the RT universe almost as much as all of the gothic, future dark age stuff.

These days there are a lot more suitable miniatures available for proxying the various creatures or quickly converting them than there were back in 1987.  Getting the lot represented in miniature form would be a great project to complete.

Oooh!
These cuddly fellas are lovely, Jonas.

You are making it more difficult to stay on target with all this RT goodness you are producing.
The temptation to start messing around is becoming harder to resist.

Thanks guys. I think the messy approach to Rogue Trader, just painting whatever I want, is the best thing I have done ever. I get a lot of different stuff painted and I have no idea whatever I am going to use any of the models for.

But when I paint for specific projects I often stagnate and lose interest before the projects get finished. This way I am enjoying the hobby much more and I must admit collecting and painting is becoming my main interests and gaming is becoming second.

Don't get me wrong, I love to game with the miniatures too, but it is so rarely that it happens, so painting random stuff I like is keeping my interest instead of painting on gaming projects I might or might not ever get to play anyway.

I'm more jealous of the power armoured figure but well done on the bears!

I was given the model by Vikotnik a few years ago and didn't really know what to do with it. But when I had painted the blue Cobalt 1 miniature someone said it reminded of this one, so I painted him up to compare.

If wanted I can take a better side by side comparison picture. I don't think they are similar at all, but in bulkyness and pose they have the same feel.

Please do take a comparison picture. They were both sculpted by Bob Naismith I believe, so they should work together very well! lol
